A neighbor and dirt-bike riding partner recently sold his Sportster and is looking for a street-bike replacement. All my ravings about the 11/12 FJ's has gotten him to put them high on his list. So, out of curiosity I'm checking availability and pricing. This is the only hit on my local Craig's List search.

Are our favorite steeds starting to rise in value? I'm thinkin' that's gotta happen sooner or later.
'92 or later would be best for him I think - what do you think the good deal/great deal line is for one in today's market?

I bought my '86 for $1200 on craigslist. Overall good condition with 70,000 miles. It was bone stock. He says his has 90,000 kilometers which equates to roughly 55,000 miles. I see fj's listed between $1500-$3000 in the Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin areas. I can't say what they actually sell for though.

Paid $1800 for my '93 back in '07, then put a few grand into it through RPM. GSXR rear mod, RPM fork work, RPM shock, carb work, etc. Very clean. I would probably ask north of 3k if I were ever to sell, but I won't.

I agree with this assessment. FJ's in moderate to good shape usually go for 2000-2500. Ones in pristine shape with low miles about 3000. We are lucky to be at the bottom of the bell curve now. They are still readily available and not truly collectable yet-- so prices haven't risen. 1970's bikes are in the collectable range now and prices are considerably higher.

I bought my first Fj in 86. Brand spanking new for $4400. Bought the now 1350, back in 2012. For $600 had 10,452 miles on it. Mint except for the damage from sitting for over 10 years, came with the crashed 87 with 865 miles on it. For spare parts.
Bought the 89 for $1100 in 2014. Had damaged fairing and scoop on right side,28,000 miles. Great running condition.
Bought the 86 for the turbo bike project. Last year for $650 very rough not running. Tank rotted out. Complete. But plastics need a lot of repair.
Bought another 86 recently. Basket case. With title. For $100.
Prices are cheap if you are willing to do the work to get it to where you want it to be. And if you are willing to look for a while.
thanks folks, that's about what I would have thought though I've seen some real steals here. That ad looked high to me.
I traded an 83 XS650 for my 89 and in terms of dollars got the worst end of the deal but in terms of motorcycles there is no comparison.
Keep in mind that $3,000 CAN = $2,272 USD which appears to be in the ballpark

With 90K on the clock I think it is priced to high.

The 88 started at well over 3,000 but has been on all summer. The 90 has been on for a while too.

I would say you can find a really nice one for under $2,000 CDN here. Keep in mind we have a very short riding season so KMs are usually pretty low.

that is a great report! The FJ's are clearly still a buyer's market item. I'll be looking for a fresh rubber-mounted model.
