I had an oilleak on valvecover gasket and also leakage form many of the valvecover bolts.I think the owner before me has used wrong oilcoverboltgaskets and there was also used clear silicone on all the gaskets include the valvecovergasket.
2 days ago i changed the gasket and also the gaskets on all bolts.Had a layer of semidried oil on the cover and also some burnt oil on cyliderhead.
This made the bike smell burnt oil when hot.I washed the engine with degreaser and steamer and got it nice and clean.
But tonight after riding it it still smells oil.i checked for oilleaks but did not find any so where is the smell coming from?
Also i should have adjusted the valves but did not because i wanted to get rid of the oilleaks fast and did not have any shims so going to do that
later in wintertime.
So i wonder do i have to get another valvecover gasket when i going to adjust the valves or can i reuse the same again?
Probably will be reusable since you put new one on now and if you didn't use any sealing paste. Paste would probably glue it on the cover, head.
A new valve cover gasket will last you many miles and many valve adjustments. The bolt grommets as well. If you think you are still leaking oil then give the suspect areas a light spray of water and then a good dose of talc or baby powder. After a ride you can follow any oil leak up to the point of its origin. Do not use any sealant on the gasket except at the half moon shape on each side. I have not used any and not had any leaks. Some oil leaks down during a valve check so after the first ride the oil should be mostly burnt off. Synthetic oil takes longer as it does not off burn well.
Ok thanks for your inputs .Then i will reuse the gasket i did not use any selant . One thing i remember now reading from another post in this forum is to check the crankcase ventilationhose that its connected to the airfilterbox.mayby it has slipped off ill check that tomorrow.
I use semisynth yamaha lube 10-40. Any tips where i can buy shims?
New shims can be purchased from RPM racing. Just click on the banner add above. I got 3 last week and my FJ is ready to roll....
Valve Shim (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=Head%3AVs) Valves can be found here.
Valve Adjusting Tool (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=tools%3AVAT) You'll need one of these if you plan on adjusting them as well.

10W40 could be a little light according to manual, but will get you good through the winter if you ride.
BTW, does any one of you guys change the oil to 10W30 when temp drops below 5 °C? 20W40 is recommended on higher temps. I use Motul 20W50.
