Hi
I was looking for a winter project so I just bought a 1984 FJ1100 which needs some work but is in fairly good shape. Engine and mechanical look to be in good condition. A few of the initial issues are:
1. Fuel cap doesn't lock which seems to be a common problem
2. Brake light doesn't work
3. Signal switch is broken and choke switch needs some work
4. Needs to be repainted.
5. I'm sure I'll find more things to correct but that will be part of the fun.
Looking forward to getting some advice from the great folks on the forum.
regards
Bob
Welcome aboard Bob!
One issue at a time, but this may help with the gas-cap.

Bob,
You can often find the signal switch/choke control assembly for sale used, on eBay (USA, and maybe in Canada). If the eBay assembly is not 100% good, often you can build a good one from two bad ones. That's what I did.
Welcome to our little madhouse. :yahoo:
Cheers,

Only the 1100s have the choke integrated into the turnsignal switch. 1200s will not interchange...fyi.

By the way Bob....where in the great white north are you located?
Guys
Thanks very much for all the info. This is really going to be a great place for information and support to get this bike back into great shape.
Should have mentioned I'm in Ontario.
Bob
Bob,
There is a pretty active group in Ontario so you should be in good hands.

Great to know that there is a very large group here in Ontario.
I'm in North Bay but always in southern Ontario for business and always up for a ride.
Big progress tonight, I figured out how to get the seat off :yahoo:
Bob
Welcome, I have an 84 as well and live by St. Thomas in southern Ontario. Good luck with your bike. Mine is not quite stock any more, can never leave stuff alone.
wow pics, hello new fj rider.
Guys
Mine is certainly not entirely stock. My goal is to get a reliable bike out of this build Here is what I have right now,
I'm going to start a build thread after Labour Day.
I really appreciate the local (Ontario) guys jumping in here. I can see that part are going to be an issue in some cases and will be interested how or what you've done to solve problems that I'm sure will arise.
looking forward to get started with this,
Bob
First Thing:
Get a hair dryer or heat gun and peel off that fffff!@#$%ing flaming skull! :bad:
Everything is gravy after that. :good2:
Bob,
Welcome to the club! You'll get lots of great info, advice and support from this group.

I'm glad somebody else said it first, LOL. That vinyl is f'ugly.
It reminds me of my slogan on another forum "Dude, interesting bike. Did you customize it yourself or was it all f'#c#ed up when you bought it?"
I bought an 1984 FJ1100 in 2012 that is what I'd call a beater; got it CHEAP. It gets enough money sunk in every year just like my previous bike to be #1 Safe, #2 Reliable, #3 Fun. Mission accomplished.
Not pretty up close but lots of fun, especially this season.
I'm part of the southern Ontario crowd. Lots of knowledge here you can tap into online and in person.
North Bay is a 4 hour trip. I do get up to around Gravenhurst several times a year, work related. I see you already put your pin on the world map of owners - +1. That helps, considering Ontario is big enough to be across 2 time zones, one has to narrow it down a bit.
Tough crowd but honest
Yes those hideous decals will be the first things to get some serious work and be removed.
I'm really looking to clean it up, repaint and fix some of the major issues keeping it from being a great reliable bike. I'm not concerned about keeping it totally stock but at this time I want to stay as close as I can to sticking to its roots. But i understand that parts may be scarce so finding alternatives will definitely be an option.

You have just said the Magic Works. You will find that a fair percentage of the bikes on here are not exactly stock anymore. There is a highly contagious and debilitating disease that goes around FJ owners. It's called Moditis. Be careful. It starts off with, I might just get one of those spin on oil filter conversions, then all of a sudden you are doing wheels conversions. It is indeed a slippery slope to fun (and sometimes a lot of swearing), riding enjoyment and quite a few empty bank balances.
Other than that welcome to our little international group of lost causes. Good to see another 1100 coming back into the fold.
Mark
Welcome Bob!
Don't worry about Moditus, your wife should worry, not you. It's quite enjoyable truth be told.
What I've found to work with my wife is to (over) explain how I am making my bike safer.
"Honey, it's all about safety....It's a 30 year old motorcycle.....Don't you want me to be safe?"
What can she say to that? "No honey, I want you to die....."
Although I did have to be a bit more creative when it came time to write the check to Randy @ RPM for his bitchen 1380cc engine.
She just rolled her eyes.....yea, it's all about safety.
