Title: Is there a larger windshield for the 89/90 model?
Post by: Tuneforkfreak on August 04, 2016, 09:33:15 AM
Ive been looking around trying to find some form of larger wind break for my FJ but having no luck. Does anyone know of a source for anything larger than the stock piece even if just a small amount. I know its a long shot but I figured I'd ask as I know lots of you guys have hidden jem resources.

There are a couple of options for a larger windscreen. A word of caution...... :shok: They are on the expensive side.

Option 1.... MRA TouringScreen windshield.

Option 2.... MRA VarioTouringScreen Windshield.
http://www.twistedthrottle.com/mra-variotouringscreen-windshield-for-yamaha-fj1200-88-90 (http://www.twistedthrottle.com/mra-variotouringscreen-windshield-for-yamaha-fj1200-88-90)

Option 3....Ermax High Screen Windshield
http://www.motomachines.com/Ermax-High-Screen-Windshield-for-Yamaha-88-90_p_4104.html (http://www.motomachines.com/Ermax-High-Screen-Windshield-for-Yamaha-88-90_p_4104.html)

Option 4....Powerbronze flip screen
http://www.powerbronzeusa.com/searchedproducts.aspx?maketext=YAMAHA&modeltext=FJ1200&yeartext=89 (http://www.powerbronzeusa.com/searchedproducts.aspx?maketext=YAMAHA&modeltext=FJ1200&yeartext=89)

I have used all 4 of these windshields on my 1989 model. They all work well and deflect varying amounts of air. The MRA VarioTouring screen deflects the most and the Ermax deflects the least.

I am 5'7" tall and I use the MRA VarioTouring for the cooler months and the Ermax for the summer months. Keep in mind, individual height along with the use of a stock seat versus a Corbin seat and handlebar risers all factor in on how well a windshield works for each individual. At 5'7" tall the OEM windscreen has my head looking like a bobble head doll at 70mph. The MRA VarioTouring and Ermax high screens allow me to ride at 85mph all day long with no buffeting. If you are 6'4" tall, the results WILL be different.

The photos are in the option list order.

Pat, does Gustaffson still send their screens out undrilled?  :unknown:

No difference to me, but some find it a challenge.

Yes, they have always sent their screens out undrilled (to my knowledge)

You must buy the special acrylic (sharp) drill bit. Normal drill bits will wander on the smooth plastic surface.
On the several screens I've drilled and installed, the dark tinted screens are the hardest. You need to shine a flashlight thru the dark tint to see the holes in the black mounting grommets, to be able to mark the holes (w/sharp awl) while you keep the screen centered and even on the edges. Spacers help.
I start with marking and drilling the two front holes, install the screws, then that stabilizes the screen so you can accurately mark the side holes.

The light tint or clear screens are easy to see and mark, the dark tints are much harder.

Another option here:

These are pre-drilled. I bought mine around 10 years ago - perfect fit.

Thanks for all the links guys, I appreciate it. I went with the moto machines screen because they where the only ones who didn't say out of stock. I would have rather had the one like Fred has but If this one ends up being available I'll get to check it out and see how it works and looks. I'm not gonna be picky and I'm thankful as hell I was able to find a few sources, sweet.

How do the acrylic screens do with taking a hit from a stone? From what I understand, acrylic will shatter dramatically when it fails but it gives a clearer initial product and is easier to restore by polishing.
Polycarbonate screens are tougher and resilient to impacts but get cloudy over time and are harder to restore with polishing. Polycarbonate screens also seem harder to source in general, not just for FJ's I think it's more expensive to purchase raw materials and to form.

FWIW, I'm 6'2', and (even with the Corbin seat), I've looking for a decent lower screen than my Targa +2"...

I've got an old beat up OEM that I may do some carving on when I have time.

Didn't mention this but my order from Moto Machines was cancelled due to my note to them asking them to do so if it was gonna take a while to ship as I'm moving in a few weeks. I used Pats source for Gustaffson plastics and asked them to make me the European style flip up like most of you guys have. Pretty good time wise , it said three or four days to make it and it shipped out of Florida today.  As you guys have mentioned I'll have to drill it but I'll make it work without tearing it up to bad. Looking forward to see how it does.

On a side note I really like the double bubble. Cheap! (I think I found this one for $19)Chinese one on my 89. Works perfect for me. And I think it looks good too . Thanks Fred.
Didn't realize how good it works, until I got on the 86. For the first time in almost a year.

I'd like to say that I'm jealous of that windshield but first my envy would have to point out those forks/brakes, that dash, those bad ass triple clamps and the sweet ass Kookaloo emblem. If I had a link to that windshield for 20 bucks I would have bought three of them.

Fred did a write up on the windshield. It's been awhile I if I remember right it's for a Honda I can't remember which one. You have to trim it to fit. Fred's write up covers it. I have another in a more bronze chrome I bought. And then I found the blue one. Just did a search on fleabay.

I'd have no problems with modifying a Honda screen to fit, do you know which model Honda it was? I just paid $170.00 for a Gustaffson screen and I don't even really know if it will be to my liking or not. If I had an alternative like the one you have I'd still most likely try it to see if I like the look/function better than what I have on hand.

The chrome windscreen is the one I did the original write up on. I also made one using the clear iridium for Chris O'Sullivan in England.

There is also a larger double bubble available for the CBR that I tried. Darran Taylor in Australia used one that is similar.

The one I have is for sale.

I'll probably order a few variables of those screens in the future. I'm currently in the middle of a move so I'd need to wait until I get situated in my new place and get my shipping address changed and make sure I'm there to receive things and what not. I'll receive the Gustaffson screen in a few days so I'll have time to drill and mount it then give it a go.

I have the MRA vario screen on mine, as I have changed the Se sting position to more upright I found the original vario flip just out of head height. I emailed BIKEHPS in the uk (highly recommended) and found out there was a bigger version "flip" attachment available. I put this on and it's brilliant. Various position options and wind flow can be either in your face or restricted.
