I have a 1990 fj1200 with no nose/chin fairing. Thus my first question - does it really do anything except look good?
Also, I have found a used on from an 86 fj1100. Will it fit my 1200, if it does more than look good?
thanks

What do you expect a fairing to do?
Ive seen plenty of FJ's without that piece of plastic and from the view over the handlebars I bet the fun is equally enjoyable. I wouldn't let it stop me from riding.
In '82/83 the FJ was designed to compete in endurance racing.
The chin fairing had 2 duties,
1) It was part of the aero package, filling the low pressure zone under the engine. High speed voodoo magic, wind tunnel testing, etc, etc.
By all accounts, Yamaha succeeded with the aero design. When introduced in '84 the German riders found that the FJ was extremely stable while cruising the Autobahn at 140+mph.
2) Several tracks require a safety reservoir or sump under the engine to catch and hold oil in the event of a cracked case or lost seal.
Typically the safety sump has to be a certain size in relation to the amount of oil the bike's crankcase holds.
The oem chin fairing obviously does not qualify a reservoir, but Yamaha wanted to replicate "the look" the racers had on their endurance bikes.
still the second question is outstanding:
will a chin spoiler from an 86 fit a 90??
