Title: Greetings from Austria // Looking for Ideas
Post by: Karkarov on June 30, 2016, 11:43:14 AM
Dear Co Bikers ! ;)

My name is Igor (24y) and I am studying Mechanical Engineering in Austria !

In March I got a FJ 1100 1984 for about 270$  and now I am working on the Machine. She stood still in a garden ( without protection )  for about 6 years  :cray:
Despite my expectations she started on the first try  :good2:

Due to the rust i had to rip off everything and now I am re-building it from the start.

I want to customize some things so i need some help from you !
The rear end should be shorter and a little bit more aggressive so is anybody here who changed the rear ? Maybe from another Bike or a Custom kit ? I don't want it to look like like a streetfighter because it schould have place for 2 People. It would also look nice with a scrambler like rear.

I need some Ideas how to start it.
Maybe you could help me get them with some fotos of custom rears !

Thank you for your Help
and i am proud to be here :)
:good2:

Welcome Igor, glad to have you with us.

On my '84 I put on a ~1.5" shorter (stronger) swingarm from the 1997 YZF1000 Thunder Ace. The swap needed to convert my original swingarm linkage over to the "dog bone" style linkage used on the later model FJ's ('88-'93) To do this I needed to find a relay arm from the '89-90 FJ to make the conversion fit.
Here are some pictures: (more are on page 34 of the FJ bike gallery)

I am glad that FJ found a good owner after years of neglect.  Best wishes.  Pat

[sse]I will make pictures the next time I am in the Garage.
Yes the 6 years hit her strong...

Before I will make a new swingarm i want to change it's tail. Like new seat, LED Blinkers and plate holder.
In Austria we have strict laws on what we can change on our Bikes so it is easier to change that than to change the swingarm ;)

If I could only use one word to describe your bike I'd choose envy.

I am glad that FJ found a good owner after years of neglect.  Best wishes.  Pat

Karkarov,

Six years is a long time, for a bike to be out in the weather.  If I had your bike, I would repair and re-paint the things that need attention now.  I would simply ride the bike for a while.  Discover any problems, and repair things as needed.

The lights and plate holder are very minor jobs.  You should know, you will need special resistors with the LED lights, to make them flash at the correct rate.  LEDs alone would flash very fast, and they may damage the flasher unit.  Many electrical functions run through the flasher unit, not just the turn signals.  You want to be very careful with it.  You may have serious trouble in finding a good one, if you need to replace the flasher unit later.

Once you are confident that the bike will be reliable for you, then it will be time to start with the other modifications, maybe during the winter months.  For now, the brakes and suspension systems may need inspection, and maybe some repair work.  Many repair jobs are illustrated on this web site, so you will know in advance what parts are needed, and how to do the work.

There are a few makers of seats in business for you, so you will have several choices available for seats.

Old tires can be dangerous, especially at high speeds.  I like the Pirelli Sport Demon tires, for my 1985 FJ1100 (see my avatar, to the left)
Check that there are no rodent nests in the air cleaner.

Cheers,
Red

I mean everything. :good:

Welcome Igor. This is the place to figure out anything about an Fj.

And yes Pat's bike is the cleanest, prettiest, most polished Fj. And it's even better in person. Leon's is right up there with it.

And Randy from RPM. Is truly amazing. Don't know how he does it. Robert is now an unsung hero at RPM too. Good people.

Welcome, and don't worry too much after seeing the polish of Pat's bike. Most of us just like to ride and not worry about blinding anyone while it is sitting still.

Welcome. Be sure to pin your location on the map. There aren't very many of around here. I agree with the fix what you need to and ride it thinking. Mine looks like crap, runs Ok and I keep finding things I will try to fix during the winter. As long as it will get you safely down the road, ride it. I understand about the laws here, I caught hell over my Laser muffler.

That thing is still around, somewhere (I moved and I can't find it). But it just might show up again, at some future Rally. Maybe. Y'never know.  :diablo:

Hey Igor, I bought an 84 that had been sitting around for 7 years although, unlike yours, it was in a climate controlled basement and the engine had been removed with the top end off waiting for an engine stud to be replaced.  But even after putting everything back together and getting the engine in the frame and running, there are a lot of issues that needed to be worked through - brakes, suspension, etc.  So I would recommend getting the stock FJ up to speed before working with too many major modifications.  I'm sure some of these modifications/upgrades are useful at the extremes of use, but the basic FJ (even with 80s technology) is a very capable motorcycle.  Enjoy and hope you have success with your bike.
