Title: iPhone integration
Post by: Cash Dereszynski on May 12, 2016, 10:39:25 AM
Street fighter cowling replaced stock cowling along with instruments, I mistakenly bought a cheap Chinese tach speedo cluster no intructions included, what a deal. So long story short I struggled with the install wiring mounting, speedo calibration etc. Untill I had an epiphany junk that shit replace with a piece of plastic to cover the hole for the old tach remove wheel sensors cables connectors run a USB cable to charge the iPhone and Velcro it to the dash. Bam, pow I'm freakn' Batman with my Bluetooth helmet I got toons, nav, phone, speedo, altitude, way points for gas ups, intercom with riding buddies if I ever ride with anyone
(Pat!) So what I'm sayn' is yeah, good day

Also a wifi view finder for the rear facing HD Sony Action Cam, again velcoed to the dash. I can start and stop Recording on the fly good for about an hour and a half per charge so far.

I have thought about this as well....our data plans up here are really expensive so that's the holdback.

Hitting 6K is Ok, passing 9K might cause an issue....

Cap'n Ron has a phone navigation app that is offline and does not eat up data when in use. He used it to travel all over the US on his mega ride, ask him about it.

I've been experimenting with running the Co-Pilot app on a couple of dedicated android phones (Moto E, Hydro Air).

Seems that how well it works depends on the phone.  The Moto E works great as standalone GPS, the Hydro Air not so much, even though both claim both GPS and AGPS capability.  Disappointing, because the Kyocera Hydro Air is waterproof.  Best part is, the Moto E, and the Co-Pilot app are < $40 US, all in.

I think you do -- unless you want to shift at 6k all the time.  Easy solution though https://www.tinytach.com/ (https://www.tinytach.com/)   there are many types of these -- research and get one that will work best for you.  Most are waterproof and made for outdoors.

Also ---Most of these types of tachs run by just running the sense wire to the spark plug boot --- senses the spark ignition.   I was going to put one on my Waverunner ( it has a tach ) but you need more accurate reading of RPM's to set up the ski when modding out.

Yep...that's exactly accurate Noel!

The CoPilot app contains all map data and points of interest within the app for all of the US and Canada (other countries too if you download those)...so, no data use at all.  You can optionally search for points of interest from within the app using Google, Wikipedia or Yelp...and that would use  data.  It's a rare occasion that I use that, but for some really odd points of interest, it's handy and the address from the web search automatically gets populated, so you're ready for navigation.  And yeah...it's about $10.  An extra $5 for all of Canada!   :good2:

I agree with Randy in that it works differently on different phone platforms.  I've always used it on the iPhone and it rocks.  I recommended it to my sister and she downloaded it to an Android tablet and was struggling a bit.  When I went to visit her, I could see what she was talking about...just not as straight-forward as on the iPhone.

I've always had it mounted front and center using a RAM mount, just below my view of the gauges.  I ran an iPhone 4S like this for the past 4 years:

I just upgraded to an iPhone 6S Plus...I fabricated a new mount for the bigger phone and it sits in the same location:

I can see next turns at a glance and the general shape of the road ahead.

On that last point, the larger screen of the 6 vs the 4 means I get to see more of the road ahead and "next turn" info is slightly larger.  I'm looking forward to the extra real estate!

4S vs 6S Plus:

Almost all of the other tools I use from the iPhone don't use data either.  About all I use data for is live weather radar to help avoid oncoming storms!

Cash,

LOVE this integration!!!  I'd like to talk to you more about that setup at the WCR!

I was part of a consumer advisory council around 2008 for "Company X" that wanted feedback on a potential electric car they were planning.  I think I was part of it because I have a Honda Insight that I've cracked 90 MPG on a tank.  They asked all sorts of questions getting into every feature, usability and expectations out of the car.  When it came to "the dash"...gauges, entertainment, climate controls, trip computers, navigation and the like, I said, "Just give me an iPhone mount."  The rest of the people in the room looked at me like i was a nut.

I think you do
[/quote]

6 k RPM is the start of the kick ass power of the FJ, shifting in that range of proformance the rev limiter will tell you to shift if you're that much in a hurry.Personally I don't look at the tach at those moments I'm too busy looking down the road, anyothertime a tach is not needed. That's my philosophy on that.

Cleanest answer is a self-contained shift light like the Harlan or raptor shift light.  Nice bright light in your face when it's time to shift without taking your eyes off the road and no worries about revving higher than you want (or having the rev limiter slow your progress!)

Seat of my pants when to shift.
No light,no digital display,no heads up in my helmet, just when I want to.
Generally much less than rev limiter.
But good thought anyway for the proformance guys on this blog.
