I've been contemplating removing the 'FJ' decals from the front fairing for a long time and finally decided to do it. Using a hair dryer and my finger nails and applying as much heat as my fingers could take, I was able to lift a corner up and then very slowly peel the decal off-- about a 10 minute operation/ decal. I then used 'Goo-Gone' adhesive remover to slowly remove the remaining adhesive. This was another tedious task. It took a good 10 minutes of soaking the adhesive with remover before the adhesive would even begin to come off. 15 minutes of firm but careful scrubbing finally removed most of the adhesive. Lastly, I used some McGuiar's buffing compound and a buffer to remove the last of the residue.

Beautiful Mark! That's how a FJ should look, nothing to distract from those lines.
Goo Gone huh? And no problems with the paint finish...obviously.
I was just working on my room addition today and had the unpleasant experience of (red) tape adhesive on my aluminum window frames. The unmerciful sun over 3 weeks, baked the tape to aluminum.
I first tried WD40: not even close, mineral spirits: nope, lacquer thinner: no go.....I mean 'everything' comes off with lacquer thinner....that shit melts plastic.
I finally remembered my wife had a can of Goof Off under her sink. That worked like a charm.
However, I noticed reading the can and noticed that it contained acetone.
I thought to myself, I sure don't want to use this on a painted surface.
Well done laddie
Acetone is not aggressive on most automotive paint, but it will take the gloss off and if left on long enough will remove the paint.
Cool, can I try it on your bike?

Sure, just keep it off the raw plastic and you get to polish the shine back.
I believe GOO GONE is citrus based and wont harm anything but GOOF OFF --is more alcohol based or something like that and can harm paint and its recommended to try on a small area first.

I removed a couple of decals from the car paint (stupid PO) with this stuff and a lot of fingernail scraping... it worked okay. Paint still looks shiny. YMMV

Good research guys. Moparman70, you're right on the money.
I happened to use 'Goo Gone' on the bike just by s**t luck because that's what I have at home. I stock 'Goo Off' at work. I considered these two products to be interchangeable, but preferred Goo Gone because it seemed to work better, and stock Goo Off at work because that's what my available vendor stocks. Anyway-- I pulled up the SDS sheets on the products mentioned. I'd stick with Goo Gone if I did it again. Turtle Wax Decal remover would be my second choice. Goo Off sounds scary, but could probably double to free rusted machine threads. :)

I sure did Bob, and fired it up last night. The tank looks great. http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=15342.msg156152#msg156152 (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=15342.msg156152#msg156152)
Text me when you're ready - I'm up for any ride - The Owls Head / Tenants Harbor area might be a good half way point for both of us.
