Title: Trip meter
Post by: Alte Fahrt on May 07, 2016, 05:58:22 AM
Yesterday I stopped and filled the tank with gas. Like a lot of others I use the trip meter to monitor the gas. I don't trust the fuel gage and don't even know if the reserve system works. I pushed the reset button and rode home. After I parked, I noticed the trip meter only read 0.9km. It should have read about 18km. The odometer seems to have worked correctly. Anybody know anything about these or a quick fix? This is not critical to me and if necessary I'll add it to my list of winter projects. And to think I thought I had the kinks worked out. Always something with these old things. :dash1:

I had that problem once or twice over the years. I found that a nice, firm push of the button is required to reset the tripometer properly. A half-hearted push, will not reset it completely sometimes. At least that has been my experience, and haven't had any further problems since.

Marty is spot on and I would be surprised in a firmer than usual push as he suggested didn't fix it.

This is an occasional glitch that all mechanical trip meters have had since day one.

Same thing happened to me as well once. Now I make sure the button gets a full press and see all zeros. It has not happened since.

Thanks all. I'll give it a try tomorrow and let you know what happens.

Did the full press and all the 0's lined up correctly. Headed out for a ride and when I stopped at a light, I checked it. Still 0.9km, pushed it as hard as I dared and rode off. Later when I checked it, it had 0.9km again. Something mechanical has gone wrong and I'll add it to my winter list of projects. Thanks for trying guys.

The trip meter and odometer run on the cable between the front wheel hub and the back of the speedometer. If the cable is still attached at the bottom then it may have worked loose at the speedo. Does the Odometer still work? If it does then you may have broke a tooth that spins the trip meter. If they both don't work then it most likely will be cable related or a common tooth that broke. So give er one more ride, I know its tough work, and make sure the odometer is turning.

I live for tough work. I'm sure I'll take it out tomorrow but as I said in the first post the odometer is working. So does the speedo.

Good for the cable, bad for my memory. I hope it is a simple thing to fix, like you I use the trip meter to know when to fill up.

Just for you, I rode it to the bakery this morning to get breakfast. Hard work, I know. :yahoo:
Speedo and odo works but the same thing with the trip meter. I ordered an instrument cluster from Ebay so I'll have parts but I probably won't mess with it till winter rolls around. Unlike a lot of you, I only have one ride.
