I know this could go in a different part of the forum but I thought I would start with the people who are actually going to be riding in the mountains with me- what your thoughts on final gear ratios? I am going to pick up a new set of sprockets and I have the standard 17/40 setup today.
I will be doing a lot of riding on this trip, basically living off my motorcycle for 2+ weeks. I have stock rims/tire sizes front and rear.
Might be riding back to MN from the rally unless I can hop on a trailer heading home (all or part of the trip) so there could be a 1,200 mile ride home, much of that on slab.
If I go to 18/39 (so I don't buy the same sprockets I have now) will I be wishing I had the other gearing when riding through the mountains?
What gearing are you running today/what will you be running at the rally?
Just a few weeks away!!! So excited to meet everyone :good2:

Honestly Isaac, the FJ has enough torque to overcome most taller gear ratios. Get whatever sprocket/chain combination that you will be happiest with the long-distance cruising part of your journey, as that's where most of your hours in the saddle will be spent.
In the mountains, just drop down a gear or two and throttle-on! You will be smiling from ear to ear.
To be honest, I like to push the bike sometimes in the mountains, and perhaps a shorter sprocket ratio would be better suited for that, but on days that I spend the whole day touring in the mountains, most of the time I find myself wishing I had a slightly taller combo for 500+ mile days.

New chain and sprocket are fitted, I went with the 18/39 combo. I kept the 17/40 sprockets as they are not that worn and could always switch back. Most likely, I will end up keeping the sprockets around for a couple of years before throwing them away...
See you guys and gals in a couple weeks!

Thanks Kurt. I am leaving in a little less than an hour. No rain for the start, and that's a good thing!
I am sending a package out tomorrow with some supplies for a couple of WCR attendees en-route to Ouray.
If anyone needs anything added to the package let me know, I am mailing it tomorrow afternoon.
