What's up fellas? Question for yas..
I'm am the new owner of a 91 1200. Yay! It's been sitting for about 5 yrs. Owner just let it sit with gas in carbs. I noticed that as I began to disassemble the carbs for cleaning that the guy that owned it before had done some tweaking (for lack of a better word) on the carbs. The vent tubes were missing. Just open holes on the side of the carbs, and a few other things but anyway. After cleaning I reassembled and noticed that trying to do a bench sync wasn't really working out. I attached a couple photos. Don't know how well you can see but...
I know the little springs are off on 1,2/3,4. That's as far as they go and their still not at the same position. Was wondering if I had something wrong. Originally the vent holes on the sides of the carbs were all facing the wrong directions. So I'm figuring that the butterfly valve and the shaft were taken out and spun around at some point. So I spin them back around so ask the vent holes were facing each other
You need the springs on the 1/2 and 3/4 adjusters.
You might loosen the screws holding the butterfly valves and see if micro-repositioning helps them seat.
As long as they're loose, replace'em with allens head screws (Randy sells a nice kit). Blue Locktite and phillips heads aren't friends.
The carbs on the FJ's are much easier to remove than the one's on my XJ's. So even if you park the bike forr the winter with real gasoline (not gasahol) in the tank, you'll
still want to clean them out every couple of springs.
The screws on the throttle shafts are peened I would not remove them. Especially since that is not the problem. 4everFj nailed it, you are missing the springs for the adjusters on the 1/2 &3/4 carbs you will never get them to sync like that.

Did you already take out the throttle plates? I can see the phillps head appears to have some damage on a couple of the screws.
If so, did you install them back with the taper of the plate facing the proper direction?
Yes, the springs are missing and need to be installed to have any success at trying to sync them.
What vent holes are you talking about?

Remember, there are NO Phillips head screws anywhere on an FJ. Those are JIS screws and yes, there is a difference. Buy all three...

Only $34. You'll thank me...
Or do what may others have done http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=carbkit&cat=39 (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=carbkit&cat=39)
Get rid of the soft JIS fasteners and change to metric hex. If you don't change to metric hex then JIS drivers will be better at not striping out the screws. I think the JIS is a better standard over the Phillips as the pressure required to keep the bit mated is much less.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I should have taken the picture with the springs sitting in there. Along with the bike I bought came an extra gas tank and a box full of another 4 carbs that went on a Suzuki (maybe) idk, but the guy had the 2&3 carbs flipped around and had taken the butterfly out and swapped them also. It took me a while to figure out how all the pieces were supposed to go. Anyway. I looked at my '84 fj's carbs and the adjustments with the springs in are all about in the midpoint or close to it. These carbs are all the way one way and their still not syncing with the middle carbs so there's something not right. I'm wondering if the shafts for the butterflies may have been swapped with the other set of carbs. I can tell they have been mixed and matched by the screws and the deep gouges on the brass.
I'll probably pull the carbs off my'84 and do a comparison. Kind of a chore, but that's what it all about :)
Thanks again. Any more suggestions I'm all ears
Here is a link to a picture that might help. You can magnify the photo. These are on a 1990.

Awesome. That was exactly what I needed! Thank you. And thanks to everyone's help. I knew it was something simple..:)
Yes, thats what both Randy and I already pointed out... :pardon:

Grind the sharp tip down a little on the standard philips screwdrivers, and they fit the JIS screws well.
That did the trick. Carbs are all good now. Now on to the ignition system... Got power to the coils. They ohmed out good. Got good ground to coils. Battery wasn't 100%, but I did have a charger on it when I turned it over, but no spark. The side stand switch is missing and will have to find where the switch plugs in at. As long as the bikes in neutral the side stand switch shouldn't effect the ignition, should it?
Is there a method of testing digital igniter box? I got power to coils but the grey and orange wires must not be giving signal
