I lost my top box yesterday on the freeway. I made the same run this morning with zero luck in finding it. Nothing of real value inside it (1 lb of Thermite), just the box its self. :dash2: :dash2: :dash2: I have the GIVI rack so a GIVI box or equivalent will work. I will be making my own searches but thought to reach out to my FJ peeps.
My lost box was a small scooter box so I can now upgrade to a larger box and carry more Thermite.
I use a GIVI knockoff of the E470. You can pick up real GIVI E470 on eBay for just over $200.00. It will fit 2 helmets.

Here is a photo of mine. It is a knockoff, but it is about as close to authentic as possible.

George has a Cooscase. He bought his through Twisted Throttle, but they are no longer available there. Here is George's write up on his top box.

I did find them for sale at another site.

Here looks like an inexpensive GIVI knockoff

Here is one that looks like mine. It says 42L, mine is a 47L. I would say it is a 47 and will fit 2 helmets. Less than $140.00

Fred
Awesome Fred, thanks...
Mark,
How did that end up flying off the back of your FJ??
I think I recall correctly that you *had* a Givi "Monolock" top case? If that's true, most of these other suggestions are for the "Monokey" top cases. You'll need to change out your top plate.
That being said, I think it's more appropriate anyway that the Monkey rides with a Mon(o)key... :good2:
Be aware that most of the scooter/moped top boxes are not built to be used on a motorcycle.
The fastening system simply can't cope with the wind pressure at high speeds.
Some time ago there was an article in a motorcycle magazine (can't remember which) where they tested moped top boxes on motorcycles with very poor results...
They don't have to be cheap small scooter type boxes either for the fastening system to fail. I came across a factory fitted top box on the road a while ago that came off an FJR1300.
The lid was open and the contents strewn all over the road, but the catch that holds it on was still locked. I was told later by the owner its apparently a known fault with them. I have followed one before and noticed the box bobbing up and down while travelling, looks very flimsy.
Yep, that's why I always travel with a luggage strap around each pannier, there's no way that pannier or top box is coming off the rack unless I want it to. Bit more hassle but it's worth it. Sorry you lost your box Monkey

Thanks for this...you now have me thinking of a secondary "safety" strap of some kind. My side cases are more secure than my top case (all Givi)...Being molded plastic, I do get a bit of bobbing up and down on that top case. I've fiddled with various shimming methods underneath the case to mitigate this, but nothing has been and end-all solution. Might think about adding a couple of structural ribs on the interior.
I just use something like these Ron, adjust to the right length so the strap is tight around the rack and around the case, ( I have handles on my Givis, so through the handle), and click it in tight. Good peace of mind, get the black ones though , not fluoro yellow unless you want to :)

I like it! I make these from bulk webbing and use them for all sorts of things on the sailboat. Quick and easy!

This is a great idea, I had already thought of using an additional strap and your post is very similar to what I had in mind.
Mark --- I have just what you need and will save the straps --- they are wide straps like the picture with plastic clips.
Next time we ride remind me to bring a couple along.

Heres a couple of pics, loaded up ready to head off the next morning to the Australian Rally, :good2: Straps on!
Time to wrap up this thread, I have a new box and really like it. The old box was smaller and required the key and lever to either open or remove the box. The new box has two options independent with the key. GIVI E470N Simply III Monolock Topcase. GIVI clearly makes some quality products. I can lock my helmet and other assorted bits. The guy in front of me can lock up his Latte and a barking rat...
I also found out that RPM is a GIVI dealer after I made the purchase, I will be sending Randy my order for a lock core and some rubber bumpers.
