Title: 3cv electrics?
Post by: bikemad on February 06, 2016, 11:15:56 PM
I have a 3cv project bike I'm trying to get up and running.
The bike came with the electrical loom in a box so I have fitted the loom and hooked it up.
I have lights, indicators, horn etc working but I can't get the bike to turn over on the start button.
I have made sure the circuits are good on the start button, kill switch, clutch switch and side stand switch.
I have checked(removed) the oil level switch and it's working properly.
I suspected that the relay assembly was possibly the culprit so I bought a new one, I also bought a second hand
ignitor unit(eBay).
Battery is good(new) and if I hotwire the starter relay I can get the thing to turn over.
All the fuses are good and I have rung through circuits to see there is continuity.

I'm not sure about the reserve switch(what the hell does that do?) and if the fuel level sender has any influence on start up.
I also had the fuel pump operating when I first started but not at the moment. Is this the problem?

Basically there is nothing happens when main switch is on and start button pressed.
I'm not sure if I've missed something as I've never had a running 3cv?

Any help will be gladly received!!
Thanks Ian.

My 88 started to not start just like this and I'm sure its the neutral starting switch. I have a bypass switch fitted..

Ian, the kill switch is also a known common problem. The fuel sender unit has no influence over the starter circuit. If you can hotwire the starter relay (solenoid) and get it to turn over, this indicates to me that there is a problem with one of the safety switch circuits or the kill switch. Also check the starter button is working.
Regards, Pete.

Thanks for the reply's!

I have had the kill switch and start button apart and made sure they are operating.
When I've tried to start the neutral light is showing and the bike is out of gear but how have you fitted a bypass switch?

Thanks Ian.

I ran a wire from the solenoid to the switch and to earth. The solenoid is live all the time and a earth connect is need to engage it.

Good news!!

After chasing my tail trying to find out what was stopping the bike turning over I found it was a dodgy connection
in the plug that plugs into the starter relay box.
The female pin's are not easy to clean but that's where the problem was.

So happy days and the build continues!
Thanks for the help.
Cheers Ian.
