Title: FJ1100 1200 featured in Dec 2015 Practical Sportsbikes magazine (UK)
Post by: nchattaway on January 29, 2016, 04:58:13 AM
Hi all,

Dunno about you, but I love reading magazine articles about cars and bikes that I'm into. If you've never seen it, the Brits publish quite a few motorbike mags aimed at the Northern Hemisphere cycle of summer riding, winter restoration, for DIY inclined owners. Practical Sportsbikes - keeping your ride alive. The byline says it all. This mag mainly features sportsbikes from the 70s through 90s, but often brings sport orientated tourers into the mix. The December 2015 issue has a big detailed feature on our beloved FJ1100 / FJ1200. Lots of stripped down labelled studio quality photos, a rider review and a couple of lovely original bikes owned by the UK FJ club prez.

Worth seeking in your better newsagent if you remember.

Anyone else got any period or modern magazine articles about the FJ to share?

Yep, sure do. It was "our time", the bikes and cars we cut our teeth on, the ones we had when first licenced, did the most stupid things with, the ones we had when we were single, dated on, ran from the cops on, rode drunk, naked or with a BBQ balanced on the tank, forgot where you parked it and took 3 days to find it, the ones you should never ride/drive again (because they really weren't that fast after all) and destroy the memory, they were likely instrumental, if not part of, our first "encounter" with opposite sex, the bikes were for many our first act of rebellion and gave many of us lifelong injuries and a dinner party story forever.....memories are a wonderful thing, we only recall the good times. Most of the machines from that era were nowhere near as badass as we would like to remember them.

You can't read about a car or a bike you owned as a young buck without being flooded by memories of life at the time you owned it.

At some stage I owned most of the Australian muscle cars, and what I didn't own I got to drive for work. I have had occasion to drive some of them in recent years and nostalgia aside, sort of wished I hadn't.
The cars mums are picking the kids up from school in are faster than the muscle cars of the 70's.

I was just reading an article tonight about Honda CR500's that had me tripping back to the early eighties. The line that got me was "you only had to breath on the throttle and you were on the back wheel, in any gear"  Anyone that's owned or ridden one of these will understand.

Yep, great stuff Nathan, love it. Thanks for the suggestion, I will hunt it out, sounds just like my sort of mag.

Noel

Will go and find this mag today, looks fantastic reading. I must admit I would like a nice GSXR-1100 in the shed as well, on second thoughts maybe I shouldn't buy this magazine  :shok:

The digital subscription looks good, but I do like having a proper magazine to read. Having said that, seeing as I have just packed cartons and cartons of old 4WD/car/bike magazines into the storage shed, digital certainly would save on paper and cost.

Just got the Fj1100/1200 edition, great magazine! Bit pricey at the newsagent ($12.95), cheaper to get it delivered from the UK via subscription. Great articles and restos on classic sports bikes

I've got a few mags at home called Classic Motorcycle Mechanics that have pics and stories about the FJ1100 and FJ1200. i don't have a scanner to scan the pages and send in but I might take a few pics and see if that works.

These are the magazines I was talking about.

I've taken photos of the stories in each mag so you might be able to zoom in to read them. They were taken with a phone camera so the resolution might'n be good, but I'll keep them in order anyway.

Nice work Tony. I've got a couple of StreetBike mags etc that have FJ1100/1200 tests in them, will have to dig them out of the shed and try to scan them as documents etc.

I usually pick up Classic Motorcycle Mechanics because it has the bikes in it I grew up riding. I resent the fact that they are now considered "Classis" but I am still riding them into my old age. I missed issue 247 but now I have to get one because of the beautiful 1982 CB650 Nighthawk SC along with the FJ on the cover. I enjoy riding both. I also bought both after just seeing pictures and deciding they were good looking bikes. My Nighthawk is an enjoyable about town bike but a little light for the highway. It did toss me off after I forgot to put up the kickstand but it was smart enough to land on me to prevent any damage to itself. I still consider it one of the best looking bikes made even if it was only a one year model.  Dave

Hey Ray, why not consider a gsxr 750 instead of an 1100?  Sure there not as fast in a straight line but the 1100 on the track isn't that much faster overall.

These little bikes go fairly well with my 125 kg on it and your no where near as fat as me.. It would scream with you on it. as usual a pic of my little race bike.. sorry in advance for the thread hijack.

I have all but the very first edition.
great reading and well written with good research!

Love to Ray but just no room and no shed.  On the day of Glen's manshed day half a dozen rocked up here for a bacon and egg roll with aioli

before we headed off and it was overflowing..  No where to park etc.

We are due for another one soon though.
