The FJ was the future in 1984 (i.e. everything in one package).
Sure we've refined and improved on it, but a good rider on a stock FJ will have no trouble keeping up or passing an average rider on a modern bike (i.e. me on a Ducati Diavel :sarcastic:). (also fast in a straight line doesn't count!)
I've watched with interest the rise of the electric, and it also seems to be the future, but I suppose the 'package' for price will be what determines what we eventually, collectively, see is the right way.
Bear in mind, the FJ in 1984 was a best guess by Yamaha. Yep they got it right, but they didn't have a crystal ball either. Same could be said for the early GSXR's etc.
I'll make my own fuel before putting it in a glass case.
Long live the Mighty FJ :good2:.
Troyskie
180 miles between charges, not too bad, coupled with compatibility with Tesla's charging stations and battery costs down to $200 per kWh, the future is bright.
At this power level, this bike really needs modern rider aid electronics (like traction control)
It would be a fun Sunday ride or track toy, not sure I would take it across country.
Thanks for the link Doug. Very interesting.
My '85 FJ feels wooden compared to the BMW S1000XR. Brakes, handling, throttle response.
The difference is absolutely amazing.
I'll keep the FJ because I'm the original owner but it is no longer my primary ride.
Reading the reviews of BMW's S1000XR it is a great bike. Motorcyclist said it was the fastest bike to 180mph of all the production bikes they rode even beating the Kawasaki H2. If I was a younger man and could utilize most of its performance I would love to own one. Unfortunately the old FJ with all Randy's suspension upgrades will have to be fast enough for this old man. Speaking of something beating the FJ, lets get back to 80's. I dont know anyone who could afford a new BMW and I would never go in debt for one so it is only a pipe dream for myself and many others. Bikes from the 80's however are fairly cheap, fairly easy to fix and fairly fast are they not!! So getting back to the mighty FJ, I was always wondering about just how quick the Honda V65 Magna was in fine tuned fashion, I always heard they were quick with lots of torque and was wondering if any of you gents have rode them and give me a run down of there shaft V4 power?
Don
My buddy had a v65 saber. We called it the pogostick. When he did a wheelie the whole thing would jump up in the air. Because of the shaft torquing the wheel down. After crashing it the second time from the shaft kicking the wheel out when he was going around a corner. He sold it and bought an fj. Because he liked mine so much. I totaled my 86 after putting 14000 miles on it in 2 1/2 months. The 1350 I have now is the fj my buddy bought. Bought it from him after it had been in storage for 12 years. Then got severe moditis while getting it back on the road.

I heard that they jacked up when rolled on but what about in a straight line flat out race, I know they were fast but how fast compared to our FJ's? I think the sabre and magna were the same V4 motor, I know they were not a dog at the strip for a glorified cruzer and heard they would mod the shaft drive gear for more low end. Eighties bikes rock, the new bikes with these stupid looking exhaust cans ( all manufactures ) and strange knife like tail sections and spaceage fairings are just darn ugly to me. As they say opinions are like ,,,,,,,s and to each your own. New bikes like new car's just all look the same pretty much. Plain ugly.

The FJ had about 10 more HP than the Sabre, was about a half-second quicker in the 1/4-mile, and in the twisty stuff I'm certain it was "No-Contest". The FJ is simply an all-around better bike.
Although the Sabre was probably a great bike (It has always been on my bucket-list of bikes to own) there's probably some reasons it was only produced for a couple years.
The FJ enjoyed a production run of over a decade!
It had tons o torque. But it was definitely a squirrelly ride.(probably why they didn't make them very long) We never did run em.
Well I rode a v65 magna and it was similar to a vmax ..pretty much a straight line drag machine. Steady on the throttle in the corners or the shaft shuffle would get you..
However , dump the clutch tached up in 3rd and ride the burnout for days..
Funny but my son in law is getting an 86 v65 magna from a friend ..He is a cruiser guy ..My daughter who used to ride with me keeps saying O my god dad , he rides so slow.
Can`t see this guy and his/her Yamaha, enjoying a beer at a rally! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4asCK8yamb0&app=desktop (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4asCK8yamb0&app=desktop) :drinks:
