Title: Spare Keys
Post by: Firehawk068 on October 17, 2015, 05:11:41 PM
After hearing some stories lately about not having a spare key, or losing the only key that one has for their bike, it dawned on me...................I only have one key for my FJ!  :scratch_one-s_head:

I did a search for Yamaha key blanks, and came up with these..........http://www.ebay.com/itm/201323534079?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&var=500518397837&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT (http://www.ebay.com/itm/201323534079?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&var=500518397837&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT)

They seemed inexpensive enough, so I purchased two.

Since I already have a key-cutting machine at work, and I cut keys all the time for various County personnel, I cut my own spare keys during some free time.

Both keys work perfectly in the ignition, gas cap, and seat locks!  :yahoo:
Now I am not so nervous about losing, or forgetting my original.

Looks good Alan. I took a spare key and with a dab of silicone caulk set it inside my fairing just under the head light area. Will take some prying to get it out but it is there just in case something happens. Hate being out on the road with just one key.

I forgot to post at the time, but this thread reminded me of the same. Got the extras cut & stashed them around. Feeling much safer now.

Awesome thread Alan, thank you for posting on this mostly overlooked but incredibly important issue. :good:  :drinks: :good2:

For the spur of the moment types, most ACE hardware stores stock key blanks that work in the OEM Yamaha ignitions.

I always make sure to bring an extra key along if I am travelling a significant distance from home. It's on a separate key chain and either in my jacket pocket or tank bag to minimize the chances of losing both keys at once. That being said, i like the idea of keeping a key in a secure location somewhere on the bike.

Alan, there is a locksmith in Parker near O'Brien Park. He did a key or me and only charged me $3. If I knew that you needed an extra key I could've let you know about him. Sorry dude.

I try to always give my spare to a fellow rider when doing a trip.
