Hi,
As I had time to time startup problems ...
It's very random ...
I press the start button on the handlebars and nothing happens .
I tried everything .
Cleaning contacts, change the beam, verif starter , etc ...
It can take three months without that bell, and then a "beautiful" day, tac ! More can be started .
Only the red light appears on the dashboard , but the starter does not start .
Then I got tired .
I mounted the emergency button under the seat.
He served me a few times.
And I must say that I ride with peace of mind now .
More anguish , when I stop for a coffee , about the next start .
The green button is here !!

Did you every find the source of that problem?...I have cheat button as well but it is the only way I can start my machine. I have just begun to investigate it and spotted your thread here. I ride a 1988 FJ1200. 108000 KM on it
As to the intermittent starter issue. You might do well to install a dedicated external ground circuit from handlebars to mainframe. While you're at it, you could clean all the wiring harness ground points. This can make a big difference.

I would like to know how you wired this in to your wiring, I am having the same problems
For me it is problem not with starter button. My guess is that you have problem with engine killswitch.
When You try start engine, and switch is in OFF position Oil level light will appear......
I have an intermittent starter issue, but for me I know exactly what it is, just haven't fixed it, yet. I have a broken / dodgy wire going into my flasher/ starter box. I give it a wiggle and hit the button and off we go. The brake is right before the connector.
