I got 64000 miles on my fj and I was thinking about a project for winter coming soon. I need to do the valves anyway so I thought I'd go a bit deeper. Bike runs great except I've noticed recently it almost feels like the valves are getting too tight. Anyway, I figure I may as well put some new rings in it. Any suggestions of other things I should replace while I got the 84 1100 on the operating table?
Hmmmm ... I seem to remember that the 1100 rings are not available in std size any longer. Be sure they are before you open that can of worms!

If its running great why mess with it? Is it down on power, using oil? By all means do the valves. When thats done do a compression check.
I can vouch that piston rings for the 1100 are no longer available. If you really want to go down that road, your only option is to bore oversize and fit 1200 pistons & rings.

Not sure how you determine the valves are feeling tight when riding it but 64k is not a lot of miles if all the indicators are good.
Pulling apart a perfectly serviceable engine is a waste of money. I know nothing of your skill level but this sort of job introduces and element of risk and the potential to go awry. Yes, many get away with it, a lot don't.
If you re-bore it and do all the work yourself, it will cost about $1500 in parts alone and all you end up with at best is what you have now, a sweet running motor.
Wait till it needs it, which may be never.

Lol. Yeah, I know it seems like a waste. I'm just looking for a winter time project. Brainstorming. It is beginning to use oil more regularly. I'll do a compression check and maybe a leak down test after I do the valves
Adjusted my valves. Found some interesting things along the way. Yeah, kind of a tedious task. Took me about 6 tried to get the keeper to keep on the far side of the mounting bolt. Kept wanting to pivot. Figured it out tho. My second cylinder plug had a small amount of oil on the end of it. All the other cylinders were bone dry. Decided to torque the head bolts to check em. Started at 15lbs and worked my way up to just under 25. Forth acorn nut, top row is either broken or stripped cause it just turns. Won't tighten. All the rest of the exhaust bolt were a little loose. I'm just gonna run her until she breaks a leg and go from there.

Along with new gaskets, I would at least replace the valve seals, starter chain, cam chain, update the shift forks and back cut the transmission dogs.
