UPDATE 11/19/15
Hey folks, I just got a call from the Willits KOA for next year's 2016 WCR.
They are now ready at this time to accept reservations for June 2016. ***Call now to be sure you will have a cabin reserved***
Wednesday June 1st thru Sunday June 5th 2016 Call the Willits KOA # (707) 459-6179 and ask for Stacy
Avoid using the 800 number, best to call directly.
The cabins are K1 thru K12 and cost $84 per night double occupancy There are 4 deluxe cabin lodges available costing $198.45 per night double occupancy.
Again call ASAP
Hwy 128 from Cloverdale to the coast is finished and it's amazing! It feels like a completely new road. Very smooth with a good mix of corners and straights of varying speeds. Something to consider.
Pat,
What is the "best ride route" from Palm Desert to Willits?
Thanks,
Jeff
Hey Jeff, there are 3 primary ways to head to NorCal from the desert, 1) the coastal route Hwy 101, 2) the mid state route I-5 and Hwy 99 and 3) the Sierra route Hwy 395.
The 101 coastal route thru LA to Santa Barbara is too crowded. A cluster fuck thru LA. Hwy 101 north of Santa Barbara up to about San Jose is beautiful ride. Congested thru San Jose to San Francisco until across the Golden Gate Bridge north to around Petaluma.... North of Petaluma, Hwy 101 is fine all the way up to Willits.
The mid state corridor, I-5 and Hwy 99 is the fastest but construction on I-5 has that 2 lane freeway choked down to 1 lane with heavy slow traffic. Even on a good day, I 5 is a god awful mind numbingly boring ride. Hwy 99 thru Fresno is a better choice. These Hwy's will get you up north to The Bay Area (Oakland) where you cut over and pick up the Hwy 101 via 580 and the San Rafael bridge.
The Sierra route I like the best. Longer, but less traffic. Beautiful scenery from the barren high desert to the pine trees. Hwy 395 up to Mono Lake then cross the Sierra's over 1 of 3 routes, Tioga Pass, Sonora Pass or Moniter Pass....then over to the Bay Area and up Hwy 101 or better, if you want to bypass the Bay Area traffic you could pick up the I-5 in Sacramento head north and take Hwy 20 west thru Clear Lake and over to the 101 ending up just south of Willits.
You could also take 395 all the way north to Reno, Nevada and come over the mountain on I-80 by Lake Tahoe then down to Sacramento and out to Oakland, but why take the crowded interstate over the Sierra's when you can ride on Tioga, Sonora or Moniter?
Thanks Pat....exactly what I was looking for. My bike is on the way to Phoenix tomorrow. Should be three of us for the WCR this year. Two other blokes on their Harley's (one owns an FJ but brings the Harley south) as well. Then riding up the coast to Washington and back to Alberta. Just beginning route planning.
Thanks again,
Jeff
I've got 2 cabins reserved, that leaves 9 cabins left. 1 cabin lodge is reserved, 3 are remaining.
They (KOA) will not hold these cabins beyond this week for our group so, time is of the essence for your reservations.
Pat I booked a deluxe Cabin on-line....not sure if it shows up in you list or not
Jeff
Got my cabin booked. :yahoo:
Arriving the evening of the 1st and departing the morning of the 6th.

Cool beans Fred and Jeff....are we riding together to Ouray after the WCR?

I will be sporting the Yukon and trailer again. :shok: I will have a 15 and 13 year old with me.
My preliminary itinerary is as follows.
Depart Willits no later than 8am Monday the 6th. Head east and south, pick up Highway 50 and cross Nevada on 50. Hopefully get as far as Hinckley/Delta, Utah. Head out the next morning to Moab, and spend the day exploring Arches National Park and possibly Canyons of the Ancients National Monument later in the day. Spend the night in Cortez, CO. Head out the next morning, 8 June. A quick run down to 4 corners for the 'Been there/Done that' t-shirt.... :sarcastic: Then head through Durango and up to Ouray.
If that sounds good to you Pat, You are more than welcome to load the FJ on the trailer.
Fred
I don't know if I will make both rallies, I really want to... But I have missed the central rally too many times and if I can only make one that will be it. If fortune smiles upon me and I make both I may need to tent it or find a bunk for the WCR....

I think that would be great except we had planned to ride up the coast....never know though....the best laid plans of mice and men...

Thank you Fred for the very kind offer.
I look forward to meeting those kids. I have some stories to tell them about their dad (oh shit, this is gonna be fun)
Like always, I ride to the FJ rallies (excepting once)
My FJ has only been on a trailer 3 times in the last 31 years.
1st was a trip back to Tellico ECR with Marsh and Klavdy.
2nd was after my low side accident (getting home)
3rd was when I discovered the engine damage from the accident (oil starvation) and had to tow her to Randy @ RPM for $$ surgery.

Take Steve up on his offer.

I like to head up the day/night before and start early, so we leave Wed if that works...

Just the Wittits WCR.... We need to keep a eye open for a bunk for Capn Ron at Willits.
Mark, do you want to ride with us over to Colorado? You will just need gas money. We will have a bunk for you. There are 3 of us riding, Paul, Jason and I....you'll be the 4th so we end up getting 2 rooms anyway.

That can work -- but I was thinking of maybe stopping prior to Willits for the night -- instead of making one long run --- get 3/4 of the way then move the rest of the way Thursday Morning arrival for Noonish thursday. Leaving enough time for an afternoon ride with other folks that are there. Just thoughts open to idears -- Let discuss offline sometime

I was thinking of ride up Wed, campfire fire (Thermite) stories, Rally ride then figure out the ride home.
Hey guys, here's my plan:
First off, I dislike central I-5 with a passion. Hwy 99 is barely tolerable...barely, therefore,
I'm leaving the desert on Tuesday morning and going up 395. I'll hook up with Paul and Jason Lawson and spend the night in/around Coleville/Topaz. Wednesday morning over Monitor Pass and down to Sacto. Up a short distance on 5 then use the 120 cut over through Clearlake, and west to Willits. Arrive in Willits Wednesday afternoon.
I need to snag someone's pickup, so I can make a run next door at the saw mill to pick up some firewood.
Is it rally time yet?

Skymaster got a cabin reserved at Willits and we're splitting...so I'm all set for a place to rest my head! Rally time is nearly upon us! :yahoo:
We need to find room for one more. Cash wants to attend the rally as well. If the cabin Steve and I have sleeps three then we are set. Anyone else with a bunk to share?
I have a tepee with three available cots, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.
Due to the lack of vacation time. I am sadly having to back out of attending this years WCR. As of today, I have canceled my reservation for a cabin. If all of the cabins have been reserved there is now one available. For those that will be attending the Central Rally the following weekend. I will see you in Colorado.

Steve, ride with us to Ouray, you can see Fred's beauty there.....
Some jaw dropping scenery thru Utah, on the way to Colorado, for even more omg vistas.
To hear a FJ singing her kookaloo song, echoing thru the canyons at Flaming Gorge, is the finest music I've ever heard.
I really want too Pat, but can't due to similar issues as Fred, -- I will someday though soon. its been awhile since I have riden the bike through them parts -- Gunnison -- Pikes --- man....I want too

Heads up: there appears to be one handicap accessible Kabin left available - although, I'm not sure if you have to actually be handicapped to rent it...
Don't forget they have motel rooms available in Ouray also.

Cabins for the HC are not protected like parking spaces. They need to be provided but the business providing them may rent them out to anyone. They have more room in the bathroom and the ramp access can be helpful when staggering back from the campfire. No steps to navigate...

A ramp, yes, a very handy feature to have so you can roll your bike under the porch, in the event of thundershowers.
Something I noticed at last year's Central Rally.

Hello everyone.
I am getting a little concerned about this years rallies, with WCR a month away. There seems to be almost no discussion about it. Also Colorado, a week after that. Just seems like there is little very excitement about this years spring rallies. What is going on? Am I missing something? Hope this gets the ball rolling.

Very much looking forward to seeing you...at both?
:nea: Sadly I will miss Willits....I retire in a few weeks and had planned to get a nice long trip in as my retirement present. I have sold my house of 32 years and bought a place an hour east, this in order to finance my retirement. I get my new place June 1..... so that is the short answer. But next year and years to come.
Thanks friends.

You will be missed for sure Henning! Loved that house in Coquitlam, but I fully understand the house-shift for the awesome goal of retirement. That just means we get to see more of you!

I would have loved to finally be able to make this rally, but unfortunately scheduling conflicts and a limited vacation budget has made it another no show for me. I may be able to make it to Ouray for a few days, but that will be situation dependent.
Safe journeys and adventures to all. :hi:
