Title: Ignition Coils?
Post by: GhostMerc on August 05, 2015, 07:47:25 AM
I'm looking to grab a new set of coils for my '86 frame/ '89 motor FJ.  A couple of questions, and I'm pretty sure I know the answer to the first one.

Are the coils interchangeable between all model years?

There is a set of Accel racing coils on eBay right now; does anyone have any experience with these?

Using the boats.net website is easy to find the part numbers and track their interchangeability...

'84 - '86

Left: 36Y-82310-60-00
Right: 36Y-82320-60-00

'89 - '93

Left: 3CV-82310-00-00
Right: 3CV-82320-00-00

Even though Yamaha switched part numbers, they appear (graphically) to be the same. I do know the number of pickups at the crank's end went to one on the later models, from a quantity of two on the earlier models. Possibility that Yamaha changed the resistance value on the ignition coils. I only have earlier model FJ's. No access to the Factory Service Manual at this time to provide a resistance value for the coils.

No experience with Accel coils.

1) Yes

2) No, but as long as it is a 3.0 ohm coil you will be fine.

I have had the Accel coils on my FJ for the last 20 years. Never had any issues with them.
