Title: My FJ was insulted Sunday.
Post by: TexasDave on July 13, 2015, 06:13:21 PM
I left for a lunch get together of Two Wheel Texans about 90 miles west of Ft Worth Sunday. Beautiful day but slightly warm. Speed limit of 75 with most people going 80-85 and it felt almost cool. Over 30 bikes showed up of all makes and sizes. After bellies are full people congregate in the parking lot to look and talk about different bikes. I was sitting on my 84 FJ when an older gentleman (well older than me) rode up beside me on a new KLR and proclaimed "Where did you get that, out of a museum?" I was slightly irritated and hoped he was talking about the bike and not me. I told him it was ONLY 31 years old--was the king of the drag strip in 84 and still went like a rocket and the motor was still in production. It was the oldest bike in attendance but still looked new compared with the Ural/side car parked several bikes over. Well he agreed it still looked good for a 31 year old bike. I enjoy having a unique bike at these gatherings and most of the time the oldest. Dave

To the man with the KLR...

"When are you gonna buy a bike that is as fast as your mouth?"

Hey Dave, I had the opposite happen. I put my fj1350r in the Rockerbox show @ Road America. Last year. And had a guy say"Look at that. That just pisses me off. People go and buy a new bike. And bring it too an old bike show." I laughed.

So far I have had the opposite experience.  A couple of new bike (BMW's) stoped and they walk over and are amazed at the condition of the bike and ask many questions.  I also complement on there's and offer to trade but so far no deal....
The guy on the KLR doesn't know much. While KLR's are a fine small less than glamorous one lunger they are a dime a dozen.  Dirt bike with limited hwy ability.    I am just razing they are all good,  don't let some small minded person get to you Dave. Smile every time you pass one (in first gear).
Confirmed top speed 650 KLR 91 mph, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OJLCFMgg6w (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OJLCFMgg6w).   So that's about like second gear in the FJ :)

Are you sure he was bashing your FJ?  :unknown: To me museum quality would be considered a good thing...

Well...the FJ1100 actually is a museum piece - at the Barber Motorsports Museum to be precise
(http://home.grandecom.net/~pyds/gallery_files/kat600.JPG)

Fear not 1200 riders for you can find an FJ1200 there as well

Dave, I agree with John ^^^ I think it was a complement

You have a nice bike. A classic.

Let me tell you a story, pull up a chair. Simi Ed, Andy French, Paul Lawson and I were on our way to Colorado for the FJ Rally in Gunnison. We stopped for gas in Utah and there were a bunch of BMW riders at the station.
They saw my bike with the FJ1400 sticker and they started jabbering...one guy said "OMG so that's the new FJ I heard Yamaha is coming out with..."
I had to chuckle at that one.

Me too... (my KLR is older than the Effy with double mileage); and KLRs are rare in Germany.

Cheers Jo

Well, we love the FJ. Who cares what knobs on chook chasers think?
My bro had a KLR250, great bit of kit, go anywhere, very reliable, but it's no FJ!
Just got home from overseas today. Got the bags inside, kids settled & wife relaxed, then took my Effie for a run, aaaaaaaah!

Little story. I own (I'm the second owner) a 1990 FJ1200 with 9600 miles (no typo). My father-in-law (a Harley owner) and I went on a drive through Colorado Springs and Palmer Lake area. We stopped at a little place for lunch. There must have been at least 50 Harley's there. There were only 2 Japanese bikes there including mine. So I felt a little out of place  :shok:. We were sitting on the outside deck having a drink when I noticed an older Harley dude looking at my bike. He was all over it, looking, nodding and shaking his head. I went down and was getting ready to leave when he came up to me a asked if that was the original miles on the bike. I said yes. He couldn't believe it. He asked me to start it up because he wanted to listen to it. So I started it up, He nodded, gave me the two thumbs up  :good2: and said "gotta love the FJ" and walked away. I took that as a compliment and road off into the hills.

You COULD have blown his mind and told him that the odometer had just rolled over for the SECOND time!  :music:

Yeah, I'm betting it wasn't an insult. If he was an old guy, he probably knew exactly what he was looking at, because it was the bike he wanted when it first came out....

I was riding through Palmer Lake on Sunday. (I was on my way back from Colorado Springs also.)
It was later in the day.
I always see a ton of Harleys at that one place on the left as you ride through town.

Sometimes I stop at the "SpeedTrap" for coffee.  :drinks:

I try and look at it this way:

What's really contained in an opinion anyway?  I've heard that they're just like assholes, becasue everyone has one.

The value of anything is only to be determined by he who values it.  And there are a plethora of reasons for one to value anything.  It's like art appreciation, it's purely subjective. Is it valued because it's fast, safe, old, handsome, it was your first, it was your last, your dear old granfather gave it to you, you got it for free, etc, etc, etc!  Which is the wrong reason, and which one the right?  That's only for he who values it to say!

Peer pressure, it's highly over rated!  Actually I don't value it at all!!! ;)

Whenever I am not sure if I am being insulted, I say, " Fuck, jealousy is ugly".

Was on a ride last Sunday, ride leader was on a 2015 GSXR1000.  My bike was the only one that pulled comments at gas stations.  It also held its own decently against the GSXR on launches, and I was running faster in the twisties than some 600's (which likely had more to do with riders than the bikes).

T)
And they all usually stink.....
I was'nt there to hear /see KLR dudes delivery, so who knows..."where did you get that, a museum" could mean different things depending on tone, expression etc..dude might just be socially awkward, some people just deal with it by putting others down. In any event we are reaffirming that the FJ is a fine machine,( maybe not as refined as the wickedly sophisticated, and modern KLR) and from what I see, a lot of motorcyclist seem to be able to appreciate any machine, and the ones who talk smack either have the bike at home under the workbench in milk crates, or gave up riding, or log a few hundred miles of "cruising" a year, I used to get shit from people about sportsters being a girls harley etc etc, and half the time it was from someone who did not have a cycle.... I usually dont even offer a response to dbags like this anymore....

With the right tone, the museum comment can certainly be a compliment- its the sort of thing you'd normally say about a classic like a Vincent.  Mines got classic plates and is pretty much stock, so its really not so far off the truth to say it could be in a museum.
