I hate floats.
Did I mention I hate floats?
So, I am now several days into this. What happened is that after cleaning the carbs on the newly acquired 86 I went to put them on and was rewarded with a gush of fuel out of all the vent tubes and a drip out of the carb throats. Since this did not happen at the sellers, I assume I goofed them up while cleaning. I have not removed floats or needle seats, so I don't think it's the o-rings suddenly disintegrating.
I did a search here and came up with 21-23mm as the float height. I measured my floats - the picture I found says to measure at the highest part of the float, where the metal is attached, but that is just un-possible. If I set them to 23mm there, it would make them significantly higher than they are now, and that's just not right. Highest part of the curve of the float seems more reasonable.
At any rate, I found that all my floats had the halves at different heights. Fixed that. Still leaking. Lowered floats to 22mm at the curve. Still leaking.
Should I just keep lowering? Or am I missing something here?

Keep pressing CTL-ALT-DEL and you'll eventually get there.
Make sure the floats do not contact the top of the float bowl when you compress the spring on the needle tip.
Are they maybe on upside down? Is that even possible?

Yes, it's possible to put in floats upside-down. I've seen it done.
However, since they were right side up and not leaking before I started, and I have not removed them, I kinda doubt they flipped. :)

I made the gage in the lower left side of the photo. Made out of a small sheet of AL.. It is set at 22mm (none adjustable :( ) Helps me make sure the floats are parallel and even.

That's the thread I was using for reference. And I did measure from the gasket surface, not from the lip. I used a caliper depth feeler.
Looks like I could stand to lower the floats some more.
Hey. Just a shot in the dark here.
The floats were fine before you cleaned the carbs. Did you replace the needle and seat. Could there be a bit of shit in them holding it open (hence fuel keeps running through) sometimes we get so fixated on one thing, we miss another possibility. Just food for thought

JP, a couple of things...
Did you replace the o-rings on the needle seats after you took the carbs apart?
Did you inspect the rubber tip for the needle for wear?
Did you ensure the spring loaded plunger in the needle is free?
Did you fully break down the carb rack to individuals and replace the o-rings on the fuel inlets?
Did you soak the carbs in the carb dip you used for the jets?
Did you clean the floats and if yes, what procedure did you use?
Which of the hoses is the fuel coming from, the small choke vent (four of them) or the large bowl vent (two of them)?
Is your petcock leaking?

First, it was coming from every hose. Then, just the bowl vents.
The leaking is resolved.
I went over all floats again, and set them all at 23mm off the gasket surface, making sure they were even. In the process I found that one float was catching on a projection in the bowl.
Near as I can figure, my mistake was not taking the floats off first thing after removing the bowls. I probably bent them by touching them without realizing it when moving around pulling jets and nozzles. They were probably not quite right before and I made it worse.

mine was same, but but isuppose your needles still leak or needle seats leak
ihad same problem last summer and i did ewery possible to fix it changing float heigt
etc.. but problem was leaking needle seat :flag_of_truce:
