Title: Are These Valve Clearences Normal ?
Post by: Jack on June 19, 2015, 07:28:09 PM
Hello Everyone!

I am wondering if the valve clearances I measured today on my 1992 FJ 1200 are strange.  This is only the second time I've done a valve adjustment. The first time was on my 1991 FJ 1200 about 17 years ago. I remembered it as a relatively easy job that went smoothly.

I think I'm the third or fourth owner of this bike. It has 35,000 miles and runs reasonably well.

Here are the clearances I measured today in mm.  Intake: .006 .007,  .005 .005,  .006 .007,  .006  .006
Exhaust: .007 .008,  .006 .007, .005 .007,  .008 .007

I verified each measurement twice.   Another, related problem, was my inability to get a shim out from cylinder #1.

Any insights, suggestions, comments, etc would be appreciated.

Thanks

J

Exhausts:  .16-.20 mm       (.0062-.0079 in)   say .006 - .008 for round numbers

Intakes:    .11-.15 mm       (.0043-.0059 in)   say .004 - .006

Stock Yamaha Pad steps    .05mm  (.002in)

Are you sure you are giving us mm readings ?  They look like in readings.

The pad should come out. Try a magnet or a small awl or pick. Oil has probably got it vacuumed down.

Hope it helps.

George,

Thanks for the response. You were right, of course. I recorded then posted the clearances in inches. My measurements were right, I was just conceptualizing the clearances in inches and comparing them to the specs in metric units.

I got the job done and everything seems OK......

Now it's on to the carbs.

Best wishes.
