I don't care about it this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Motorcycle-Digital-Gear-Indicator-Green-LED-Display-Shift-Level-Sensor-US-/231567808880?fits=Model%3AFJ1200&hash=item35ea845970&vxp=mtr (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Motorcycle-Digital-Gear-Indicator-Green-LED-Display-Shift-Level-Sensor-US-/231567808880?fits=Model%3AFJ1200&hash=item35ea845970&vxp=mtr) I just keep grabbing gears until they're all gone.
Who'll be the first to attempt its install, for such a low price of admission?
I wonder if because it uses a magnet mounted to the shifter moving past the sensor that if you do not fully engage a gear it will read an inaccurate gear reading since it only appears to indicate by the magnet moving past the sensors.
Hall-effect:

Copper,
I was reading about that unit, or one much like it. The text I saw said that it zeroes itself, every time the Neutral light comes on. So even if it "misses" a shift now and then, it will correct itself once you hit Neutral again. For an all-external install, with nothing in the transmission, I'd guess it's fairly reliable.
Cheers,
Red
I bought one, so far it is just another thing on my "to-do" list ...
I picked up a similar one from Amazon only with a red LED, just haven't gotten to installing it yet.
Oldktmdude has one installed and has pics of what it looks like:
