went to the shed to start the old girl today and the choke cable seized.....brilliant!
Any ideas on where to find a sensible replacement would be appreciated..RPM are out of stock which leaves me to start calling around the yamaha dealers tomorrow in anticipation of parting with about a million dollars for the replacement following a 3 month wait..
Has anyone replaced theres of recent times? ..would be great to know where you got it
cheers

Well, there are a few options if you can't get a replacement. If it broke at the knob (control) end, and as you pretty much only need it for the initial start of the day, leave the broken end accessible and just use a pair of pliers to pull it for that first start. Even if you release it after 30 secs or so, it should continue to run, albeit a bit rough for a few more minutes.
If you live in a reasonably sized city, there will be someone that makes cables for not much money (I do this regularly for cars that haven't had spares made for 70 or 80 years)
You could go to a bicycle shop and have a look at a "universal cable kit" and see if you reckon it will do the job.
You could leave your RHS side cover off and make a pull lever out of a bit of coat hanger wire (my favourite)
One of these options will at least let you continue riding while waiting for parts, if not provide a permanent fix.
All this is assuming of course you have done the obvious and hunted around on ebay for one without success.

This should be the correct part number Rob, complete cable.

Rob,
As posted earlier, many motorcycle shops can make custom cables for you, which may cost less than OEM. This tool can clean and lubricate the new (or old) cables:

Kerosene is a very good rust-buster, and WD-40 in spray cans is almost entirely kerosene. You may be able to save your old cables with a few shots of that stuff, followed a day or two later by a good shot of lubricant. I found a good one, ProLong, but the tool shown will also accept a grease needle, with any decent oil or lightweight grease. Do not use white grease.
Cheers,

I had one melt onto the engine once . So I cut into it and freed the cable to move and covered it with a vacuum hose till the new one arrived .
I replaced mine during the rebuild. Ordered it and rec'd it within the week. Genuine, but for the 1100, not 1200.
I don't know when they get their stock in but I ordered one from RPM last night as mine has been hanging up and not letting the choke fully disengage.
