Title: WCR possible Route destination
Post by: moparman70 on May 05, 2015, 02:56:33 PM
Pat and others --- is it possible on any of the routes to end up at Virginia City --- nice historical down that I am sure the group haven't seen if not from the area ----- and I know you guys are all Ponderosa fans.

Steve, sounds good, count me it. Last year was too much fun, looking forward to this year. Have several cold ones with your name on them.

Mark and I haven't confirmed our departure date but I believe it is Wednesday for arrival late Wednesday ( while it may move up a day perhaps )  Just an idea for the early arrival guys to possibly head up that way on Thursday Morning and then wind our way back.

I will look at some routes and maybe post ideas.   I do know the road to the north of Virginia City is very good but I will look for more possible side trips.

hope this link works

it didn't---- see below

If it didn't the route is fairly simple -- Leave Colevile -- 89 North to Tahoma -( around the West side of Lake Tahoe )- to Incline Village - left on 431 ( North ) cross over the 395 it turns into the 341 to Virginia City --- late lunch in Virginia and then 395 south to Coleville

Route is 198 miles

I've been on 431 north on the lake, it is a spectacular view, and a great bike road.  Virginia City is on our list of places that we're covering while up there.

Route is 198 miles

I'm going to try to be there for the Th ride as well.

The trip up the west side and across the north side of Lake Tahoe isn't long on miles, but it is VERY slow going even on a bike.  Figure ave speed of maybe 30 mph.  Strikes me as a very long day...

Title: Suggested mountain rides for the 2015 WCR (emphasis on the word "suggested")
Post by: Pat Conlon on May 07, 2015, 03:37:06 PM

I'm familiar with this route and the slow traffic around Tahoe holds no attraction for me.

For me, the Sierra mountains have a beauty that no city can replicate....plus, very light traffic and low LEO presence.

Here's my idea:

Ride 1  From Coleville, north on 395...turn west on hwy 89 to 88 west and down to Jackson (lunch)
then south on Hwy 49 to Hwy 4 turn east....up the mountain to Hwy 89 east and back to Coleville.

Here's a link to the "live" Google map: https://goo.gl/maps/8LzfK (https://goo.gl/maps/8LzfK)

Ride 2. From Coleville south on 395 to Sonora Pass Hwy 108 over the mountain to Sonora (lunch)
then south on Hwy 49 to Hwy 120 turn east, back over the mountain to 395, then north to Coleville.
Here's a link to the "live" Google map: https://goo.gl/maps/ceK07 (https://goo.gl/maps/ceK07)
I suspect ride 2 may be too long at 275 miles.

Thank You Capn Ron for your help with the maps!

I think we'd have a hard time finding ANY loop route through the Sierra Nevadas that wasn't spectacular!  Lovin' both of these routes!

Running the 120 (Tioga Pass) takes us through Yosemite National Park...Even just running the road requires an entrance fee and it's $15 per motorcycle.  If you plan on hitting other National Parks ANYwhere in the U.S. over the next 12 months, you can get an annual parks pass for $80.  Two or three parks and that has well paid for itself (Glacier National, Yellowstone, Zion, Canyonlands...) and it helps support the amazing National Parks System we have.

If there is a contingency of riders that want to endure the flow of traffic into Yosemite Valley, I'd be up for that.  I've been through there once and it really needs to be seen to be believed.  We'll be riding right by the valley and it'll add around two hours...but that time will be added on to the end of your life because you got to see this:

For the record --- the Virginia City route was just an early bird special ---

basically and alternate idea to go on so we don't duplicate the roads we are taking on the rally for persons arriving tues or wed. ---  and give the out of town folks a look-see at Virginia City ( and I will be damned it I hoof it straight there and back)...... thus around the lake was a pretty good route.   As far as it being slow ---- as long as its not raining slow is ok --- as it gets good once you get to 431 and I am sure there are some purrrty views of the lake along the route.

I am not sure as I said about our arrival time --- I took the whole week off so I am considering travelling up Tuesday if MonkeyMark wants to --- so that would give me and extra day to fool around aswell.

If help is needed on a pre-ride route I might be able to help with that as well.

For folks who are 62 or older, there is a senior park pass you can get for a measly $10 good for a lifetime.

Keep it in your tank bag. 1 pass is good for 1 vehicle which can be car full of people....or 1 motorcycle.

Is there anyone in NorCal interested in a daytrip up for one of the rides? I'm in Livermore, and I'm not really interested in the overnight up at Coleville, but I'm down for an early run up to a rendezvous and join the run for the day.

Yeah, I'm with ya Steve!  I rode through Virginia City, but it was at the end of a 600 mile day crossing the Nevada desert in 106 degree heat.  I didn't even stop, but vowed to go back!!!

As much as I LOVE hammering out some twisty mountain roads, my riding is so embellished by the unplanned (and often planned) slow downs to take in some scenery.  The 89 around Emerald Bay is spectacular!

Keep me posted as to when you're heading up.  I'm probably going to ride to the area a day or two ahead of time to hang out with friends and run Ice House Road on the way to Colleville (been on my bucket list for YEARS!).   :good2:

Here's 27 miles of forested nirvana that is Icehouse Road:

...and one that I'd do...  just calibrating on what you're getting into.  The views along Emerald Bay and 431 make the whole thing worth while.

Capn Ron,  Ice house road is best run entering from hwy 50 , So take 50 then ice house rd then on to wentworth springs rd.  That way you are heading uphill with the grade and save your brakes . The best way to run that , Trust me and you will not be disappointed.

So enter at hwy 50 and take ice house rd to wentworth springs rd. Then after you reach Georgetown take the 193 to the 49 to placerville and back on hwy 50 to the 89 .

It looks as though you are coming from auburn on your map but maybe catch the 49 to placerville  to pleasant valley road to sly park road/E16 which will dump you onto hwy 50 at pollock pines  and a couple more miles further is ice house rd.

There are other local jewels as well .. Salmon falls road... Latrobe road...

Right there with you both...I've run Ice House Road to Wentworth Springs from the 50 on MANY occasions.  Unfortunately, I was always towing the rock crawler out to the Rubicon...  Every time, my head has always gone into the motorcycle mode thinking how great that road would be!  I totally agree that uphill is the way to go!

That being said, I'll be staying near Auburn...then heading through Georgetown, Wentworth Springs to Ice House, onto the 50 and off to Coleville.  Hoping to make a nice morning of it with an early afternoon arrival at the WCR base camp!   :good2:
