Title: Carbon fiber dip
Post by: FJscott on April 30, 2015, 04:06:09 AM
I purchased a DIY kit for dipping parts and pieces. The Hydrographics kit I have came with 20ft of carbon fiber film. My plan is to dip the fairing inner panels and gage cluster bezel. I will post up results and pics this weekend.

That's an interesting process. Fascinating to watch. Also interested how it turns out.

I hope it comes out great. Are you going to hydro dip the RZ fender?

Well I dipped the fairing panels and the RZ fender. I had a problem with the film breaking down and the pattern deforming. The fender being larger turned out like crap. The fairing panels turned out...ok. The carbon fiber design is symmetrical and any corners or bends in the piece being dipped stretches and deforms the pattern. Maybe in the hands of a pro this distortion is minimal but I couldnt achieve good results

That inner panel looks great! I didn't even know there were kits around to do that effect. I did find that the technique has been around for a while, http://www.aquadip.com.au/index.htm (http://www.aquadip.com.au/index.htm)  , metal/plastic/wood etc can all be coated. Some interesting ideas are popping up in my head for a few FJ bits,  :wacko3:

Scott, I think that panel looks great!

How would you go about re-doing a piece that messed up?

I think it looks great Scott! Is the finish really smooth or does it have any texture to it?

thanks,
Louie

I actually had a redo on one piece. Sanded with 320 grit, reapplied the base coat and redipped.
The film covered up a repair to the panel nicely. There is a learning curve, water temp is crucial. Too hot and film melts before the dip, too cold and and film doesn't stick well.

Scott, the piece in the photo looks great.

I was told the same thing when I had the fairing shroud pieces dipped. I was told the pieces between the fairing and the fuel tank were easy to do, but the shroud around the instrument panel was tricky.

Looks nice to me Scott ! A good option for some custom work. They make it look easy in the videos but there is always the "technique".  By the time you do the last piece you will be an expert .
