18T front, 38T rear... And you are still gonna look for 6th gear...

I concur  :good2:

Using this gearing I have no problem at all with either acceleration or roll on overtaking in 5th. Still pulls like a train. Of course part of me thinks it would be fun to go back the other way and have arm pulling standing starts etc, but I do mostly cruising/touring so 18/38 works fine.

I run 17/38.  I ran the 18/38 for a year and decided to go back to a 17 but they are both good as you can get for touring around on the FJ.  As FJMonkey said you still would like to have a 6th gear.  110 link chain for either set of gears.

I'm very happy with 18/40

I was on 18/38 and am now on 17/38. I would go stock (17/40) but previous owner took a link out and it don't fit no more...so it will have to wait until I get new chain and sprockets.

All are plenty fast enough, and 18/38 seems very popular for cruising speeds. I just fancy a bit more get away grunt (without getting stunt bike silly..) that's all.

18-38 here.  Love it.  Commuting and touring is how I use the bike, and 2 up and fully loaded isn't a problem either. The low end torque of FJ motor seems to overcome any challenge.  I also enjoy a slightly taller 1st gear especially around town.  The lower RPMs out on the open road make the ride more relaxing for me.  Again, that low end torque is one of the great features of the FJ.

Personally, when the RPMs are up over 6K, there's more power available than I know what to do with, and at those RPMs, I wouldn't be able to tell you what gearing I've got.

With my 18/38 set up I was riding back home after our "FJ Dollar" run last weekend, Steve (Moparman) invited us to a "Roll-On" competition. When the freeway was open and free from other vehicles we line up side by side and Steve gives the 3, 2, 1, go signal. I pulled away from Steve like his FJ was pedal powered. After the run I shifted into 5th....  :shok:

I did not know I was in 4th... Our freeway speeds were in the 70/75 MPH (113/120 KPH). So 18/38 works for me....
