Sorry, but I can't figure out how to post pics AND add captions at the same time.
I picked up a USB/power outlet panel and wanted to mount it on the FJ. At first I thought I'd just remove the panel completely, drill some holes in the right side panel of the fairing and mount everything there, but then I decided I didn't want to wreck a perfectly good fairing. So I decided to mount in between the dash and windshield instead.

I wanted the USB and power port on all the time and the volt gauge on only with the key, so wired them accordingly. They share the ground but have separate power.

I then took some thin plexiglass and painted it black. This creates the top of a "dash" to hide the back side of the outlets and the wiring

Once the paint was dried, I took off the windshield and mocked things, then drilled 2 holes that line up with the bottom two of the windshield, these help hold the bottom of the mount in place.

Once it was in place I realized that the plexiglass didn't cover the wiring enough, so I painted the whole thing black, along with the lower portion of the fairing itself.

Once I was satisfied with everything, I bolted it all back together. I drilled no holes to install this, instead I used one of the existing holes in the front of the fairing to run they wiring.

The gauge itself is pretty much useless during the day because the sun washes out the LED segments. But I'm for now I'm happy with it and I think the installation looks pretty good.

Here's a link to the panel http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00T7TTK6K/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00T7TTK6K/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
I installed mine in side panel.
Volt meter is not visible in day light.....

Thanks for the tip. I was using Dropbox to get the pic URL and pasting it between the img link, but obviously that didn't work. I'll do better on my next post :good2:

Thanks, and yes: empty space and at eye level.
Minor hijack but still on topic:
My GPS is now mounted with a Ram Mount but i need to order and install a USB power connection. There are of course thousands on amazon/kijiji. I'm looking at one that has both cigarette and usb ports. I don't want to drill into my plastics (took me forever to find good ones..i refuse to risk making a mistake on them), so i'll be zip tying or clamping up front somewhere.
is there a best choice?
All i know i want is that: battery connection will have circular connectors/will have an inline fuse/will have one or possibly 2 USB ports and likely one cig port/waterproof...
For example this has an on/off switch:

this has a zip tie connection but only one USB port:

thanks for any thoughts!

The one I installed has the power port (cigarette) on the left and 2 USB ports on the right. Check the dimensions of the one with the power switch. I think I looked at that one but it's quite large.
I ordered some sheets of ABS the other day and am going to try building an actual dash that will house the individual components of the panel so it has a more factory look to it.
Lots of variations but this is what I use at the present. I also ordered a replacement for the cigarette outlet converting it to a 2 USB outlet. More practical for me.
