Title: CRACKING UP LIKE CRAZY
Post by: chiz on April 15, 2015, 07:12:39 AM
Hey All
My instrument cluster plastic cover has cracked up all over, cracks are 1/2 to one inch long all over the cover.
No idea what caused this perhaps it was the frigid cold... Has anyone had any success making a new cover out of plexi can the cover be removed??
Thanks Chiz

The part is available and you'll need to all but remove your fairing to get to it.  At least that's the way I remember it on my '89--not sure what year yours is.

boats .net has them.  You might want to drop Randy at RPM a PM as he may be able to source it for you.

This part number is good for '86-'93.

The later "Len's" as Yamaha calls them are still available new but the older FJ1100 lens are not available new.  In that case the best way to fix that is to shop around on e bay for a used FJ 1100 cluster with a good lens in it.  When done you would at least have a spare cluster for future parts.  The Lens is held in with 4 JIS screws.  Easy to change out.  Oh and the FJ 1100 and FJ 1200 clusters are not interchangeable.

Yes, the op will need a lens off the generation of speedo he has...

However, you can fit a later model speedo cluster in your early FJ. I did with my '84. I ran a '92 cluster in my '84 and it kinda fit, not exactly fit, there was a slight gap at the edge of the cowl where the lens shape is different. I had the change the wiring on the connector block....I never did figure how to hook up the clock in the '92 cluster..

I have since gone back to a '84/85 cluster.  Look on fleaBay, they come up for sale from time to time.

I destroyed one with DOT 3 while changing my brake/clutch fluid.  It doesn't take much fluid spilled on it to ruin it - not sure what happened in your case though.
