As the weather warms up, the urge to ride is getting stronger. Currently, the FJ is sidelined due to a voltage regulator issue. The factory VR cooked my last lead acid battery. I've replaced it with a nice Shorai, but I don't want to ride it much and risk baking that one as well. The famed RPM voltage regulator has been out of stock for some time. Is there another part or source for these? Anyone have a spare laying around I could buy/trade them for? Thanks!
First of all check what is the difference between voltage on battery and on red cable supplying power to the regulator.
If You have significant drop in voltage You can install relay for regulator. For me that helped. From 15,0-15,1V on battery voltage dropped to 14,4V.

And If You know that Your regulator is faulty here is topic about installation bosh RE55 regulator:

Trace the wires from the alt to the connector on left leg side side of Fj near battery ..It is a 2 wire connector that will burn up inside and look fine from outside . This connector will cause alt overcharge because it cannot detect batt voltage . By fixing this connection you May find the regulator is ok and your charging will stabilize back to normal.
there is a transpo regulator you can use with adjustable output if this dose not fix your overcharge.
If you find that it is the regulator this is how my regulator is mounted. UniPods help with this mounting. But as Mark said check that connector on the left side first. Known problem.

:hi: Just ordered one for my 'new-to-me' '92 :good2:
John.
I finally got around to checking the running voltage and testing at the battery I saw low 13's at idle and mid 14's at about 5K RPM. This seems normal to me. Perhaps the battery was just older than I originally thought?

My normal is around 14.4-14.3 during normal riding. In the 13's just after start up at idle. I am running a Lithium battery also. I don't know what Shorai spec's for there upper charging limit. My MAX limit is 15.5 volts but if the FJ is cranking out 15 volts it would be time for a new regulator. Not all Lithium's are the same.
Sounds like you are OK.

Excellent. Then all I need to do now are get the fork seals done and I'll be ready for another season of hot weather commuting.
