I just done compression test on my 85 fj1100 .best i could get is 90psi javascript:void(0);(that's with throttle wide open).
I put a little Motor Oil in each pot via the sparkplug hole and re-tested the compressions .thay all went up to 120psi
The Bike/Motor starts fine and does not blow any smoke at all.But lacks that crazy of the mark Power (I NEED)
Instead of me re-building my existing 1100 motor .
I can buy for a lot less dollars a 89> FJ1200 4CC Motor that has been imported from Japan.
WOULD THIS BE A GOOD IDEA ??????????????
Can anyone/someone please tell me if the 89> FJ1200 4CC Motor JAPAN Motor will fit straight into my 85 fj1100 without any problems .
Are all the engine Mounts the same on a 1100 and 1200 .Will the Motor fit straight in????????????
Will my existing Ignition plug straight up to the 1200 motor ?????????????????.
I will be fitting my existing FJ1100 Carby,s straight onto the new 4CC 1200 Motor ,
any problems with Fitting my existing FJ1100 Carby,s on the 1200 Motor .
Any and all advice will be gladly welcomed ,,,,,,,,
THANK YOU regards Phil(wainot) from Aussie
No it is not a direct fit.
Different ignition systems
I think mounts are different too.
Is this a new to you Fj ? or have you had it for a while and the power dropped off?
you may just have some tight valves and need to replace some shims. If when it runs the valve train is quiet your valves are tight. noisy is good.
I would check a few things out before jumping to replacement of engine.
If new to you FJ , the rings stick from sitting and it needs a good thrashing with a good dose of engine braking from high rpm.
Hi Mark .thanks a lot for your fast reply .
I have had my FJ 1100 for about 6 months,
I must confess that I really do have two FJ1100 Bikes in the shed.
Both are in riding condition and registered to ride .
I bought the 1st one ,an 84 model that had not been going for 12 years and it also had a lot of small parts missing .
the person I bought it from was only going to use the motor ,so he pulled all the front end and wiring off.
AND Then decided he did not need the Motor .
He then tried to put it back together again so he could sell it ..
thats when silly old me came along. "Fool".
So I ended up buying .Tires ,Battery, xjr 1300 Clutch and Brake Master Cyl,s, Braded brake and clutch Lines ,Complete Carby overhaul kits x 4 .
Treated the inside of the Petrol Tank , New Petrol CAP SEAL , New Petcock and Hoses, New Intake O-Rings ,New Sprockets and Chain,
Re-Painted Bike .Had to re-build the Fairing as half the top part was missing ,The Fairing and light brace was not even on the bike ,
I had to re-run all the wiring .The Forks were put back on back to front , New Rotors ,SH Discs .new brake pads .the Indicators were missing .
Some screws missing in behind the dash and around the rear inner guard and light .Light bracket broken. Broken wire in left switch .New Clutch Slave Seals etc , New Oil Filter and Oil etc
All the insides of the Carbys were seized up and all the floats ,Needles etc were all locked up tight,
Once I had un-seized and cleaned all the Carbys out and fitted all the new Carby overhaul kits into each carby etc
I fitted my new Battery ,Fueled it up ,Primed the Carbys and hit the starter ,,
Bugger me if after about 10 winds over it fired up and sounded quite good .
I then played with the throttle a bit to keep it running and it slowly cleared itself ,but would not idle,
So i took the Carbys on and off about another 10 plus times trying to find why it would not idle .
In the end I got sick of pulling the Carbys .
So I put the Bike on my Trailer and took it to a Bike Shop and they turned the carbys up etc (cost me another $200) ,
When I when to pick the Bike up at the Shop , they told me that ,,IT IS JUMPING OUT OF 2nd and 3rd Gear under pressure!!!!! ...SHIT
All that time , effort and expense for Nothing
SO I was not going to split the Motor to change the Gearbox that would have cost to much ,
so I bought a 2nd 1985 FJ1100 IN GOOD CONDITION all over .
So I then Swapped over all the New and better Parts from the 84 onto the 85 ,
The end result is that I still have the 2 Bikes ,Both running and Riding good apart from the 84 Gearbox Problem ,
The 85 now looks real good and has now got all those New and good Parts fitted to it .
BUT is down in compression but is still fun to ride ,
The 84 Motor has about 105psi ,which is 15psi more each pot than my 85 which has 90psi ,
I can get a good 89> fj1200 4CC MOTOR for about $500 ,which is way cheaper and easyer than rebuilding my 85 motor.
BUT if the FJ1200 4CC Motor is different in the mounts and Ignition ,I will have to look at a rebuild of my existing motor at a later date,
THANK YOU again for your help and advise in this matter ..
I would like to here from anyone that has any ideas on what way I should go next ,
All the best ,,(wainot) Phil from Australia
I am pretty sure you can use the 89 engine. I believe the only change in the mounts came in 1991+ when they went to the full rubber mounted engine and the left lower mount is not machined to accept the motor mount damper and the front mounts have the bushings pushed into the case. I looked online and that is the part number split as well. I found this when I was looking for a replacement case for my 92 several years ago
the ignition, you will only need to change the ignition rotor and plate from your old engine you might want to do the slot plate for even better performance at that time.
The '84-'87 FJ used a dual pickup analog TCI ignition, the '89+ used a different single pickup with a digital DCI ignition.
Option 1) easy..Use the early rotor and dual pickup coils from your '85 on the '89 engine.
Option 2) harder..keep the '89 rotor and pickup on the '89 engine but you will need to convert over to the late model DCI ignition box (all the electrical plugs and wiring is different)
Not that it matters much but the Japan engine might have restricted intakes (smaller diameter) ? If so just use your 1100 ones (with new O rings).
The 89 and up carbs are different. The newer FJ's have fuel pumps so the 89 and newer carbs have needle and seat valves that have small diameter intake holes and the fuel routing is different. No expert here but the slides I think are slightly different also. All easy to deal with. Just information.
Over all it doesn't look that hard to convert.

:hi: Welcome Phil. Whereabouts in Aus are you? You may have an 89 nearby with a thirsty rider. :drinks:
THANK YOU to all the people that have taken the time out to reply to my call for help about putting 89> 1200 motor into my 85 1100.
This was my 1st ever Post on your great FJOWNERS web site .
A little bit about myself ,, I am 56 . A big boy ,live on the "Southcoast" NSW (Sussex) .self employed chippy ,keen golfer.
i Love just going for a ride when I get the urge
I have always had Motorbike blood running through my vains .
Started with a 2 stroke Roadbike a "Stinger" I think ,about a mid 70s model ,Twin Cyl with exhausts coming out near seat
I then bought a Z1000 in 79 ,owned it for many years and was never off it, It was part of me
then I never had a bike for about 10 years ,,Bugger,,
then I had a GPZ900 for about 5 years , I sold that about 6 years ago.
Then had no bike up until I bought the 2 x FJ1100 in the last 6 months .
I Just have to be able to go for a ride when needed. Its just one of those things
Back in about 85 I took my mates Near New FJ1100 for a ride and was very impressed .
So here we are "30 years" later and I have finally got 2 x FJ1100 that I can ride ...Great...
Once I work out what I am doing about the 90psi low Compression on the 85 bike ,(which is the Bike that I will be keeping)
I will sell the other 84 Gear Jumping Bike and just have the 1 85 model bike in good shape .
I just did not want to sell the 84 yet and then find I needed some engine parts or other parts off it etc
SO AT THIS TIME
I am thinking about just pulling the Head and Barrels of my 85 and putting in a new set of Rings ,Give the Bores a hone.
and just lap all the valves ,fit new stem seals and Cam Chain ,Gaskets etc ..
And see how she goes after that ,
BUT BEFORE THAT
I think that I will take it into the Bike shop and get the Valve clearances adjusted and set correctly
and get them to set and tune up all the Carbys , (I have already cleaned them out etc)
Then I will take the Bike for a long Hard Ride and give the Motor a real good workout and see how it performs.
If it performs strong enough for me ,I will leave it with the low Compression,
but if I am not happy with it I will just have to , do the Rings and Valves etc
I am starting to think I might be better off doing a top half Motor re-build (Rings and Valves) so the Bike stays a real FJ1100
and not a mixed up Bike with 1200 and 1100 parts here and there etc
So my plan at this time is to put the Bike in the shop to get everything adjusted/ Tuned within the next 3 or 4 weeks all going well.
THANK YOU once again for everybody that has given me their ideas and opinions of what to do and which way to go with my Bike.
My long term Plan is that one of these days I am going to go to a "FJ Motorbike Rally" here in Aussie ,
Meet a few of the FJ Rider Family ..Should be great ,,,
Thanks again to everyone regards (wainot) Phil from Aussie
Phil, you have an FJ supporter in Glen Henry Motorcycles at Nowra. You also have a very experienced FJ red & white Brother nearby at Bermagui (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?action=profile;u=536 (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?action=profile;u=536)), that will probly chime in when he comes back from work. :drinks:
