Title: Broadford Bike Bonanza Next weekend
Post by: The General on March 28, 2015, 04:00:45 PM

Arnie & I going for a little (2hr+) ride next Saturday morning and would luv ta catch up with any of you Victorians that can manage to get out of bed before noon! (Also heard some New South Welsh persons were looking for an Easter sojourn!)

Here`s the scheduled ride route, leaving around 8 ish: http://goo.gl/maps/1xGpt (http://goo.gl/maps/1xGpt)

If ya not interested in Broadford ( http://www.ma.org.au/index.php?id=1808 (http://www.ma.org.au/index.php?id=1808) ), A trendy organic coffee at the nearest pub or cafe would be great. (even if ya have to come by car!.....say 10.30am...ish). Even better if the better halves come along.

(Can organise accom if you need it. .... We`re staying at The Sugarloaf motel in Broadford till Monday Morning.)
Maybe we could do a ride on Sunday if ya about.

Tha agenda is pretty layback while the venue is sensational. ....ummmmm...we could catch up with FJ racers in the pitts, Checkout all tha Rickman Bros handiwork, sneak a look at all tha bike porn for sale, give tha fj a run round the track, take an esky to crash corner or maybe Bay 13, checkout the Victorian Alps, ......cause you deserve it this Easter.....And and annnd...we`re worth it!

Your welcome to join us for dinner Saturday night with Alan Cathcart, Ron Boulden, Graeme Crosby & John Woodley to talk about Bathurst 1979 and other stuff.

Shit, we gotta catch up....maybe we could make this an Aussie Southern Rally?

Doug, not sure how the weekend will pan out - I think we'll be in Wang, so a trip back to Broadford on Saturday could be a goer.. No need to say "enjoy yourself!"...

Yeah, it`d be Wong ta stay in Wang when I`ve reorganised the wight weather for ya!...looks like we got half a dozen of the (shy) faithful going. Will sms our whereabouts on the run. (I`ve still got ya mobile number.)

A study of the program is really impressive.....Can`t believe so many motorcycle racing styles are represented in the same complex at the same time....is there anywhere in the motorcycling world that has a similar multiple agenda?...I`d be interested to know.     :drinks:

Have a good one - I'm pretty sure we'll ride back down on Saturday a.m. and head back to Wang in the afternoon. Yes, may be a bit damp...no problem.

Twist his arm, Harvy. I suggested this to him at Grafton and I even volunteered to organise it.   Pete.
PS. It was great to catch-up with you and Peta (even though it was as brief as it was) at Grafton. Keep well my friend.

I'll be there!

Meeting up with Arnie and Doug at Ballan about 9.00.

This event has grown into the biggest and best historic motorcycle event in the Southern Hemisphere and as Harvy mentioned, is a stones throw from the best riding roads in the country, thousands of kilometres of them and no traffic. You can scream around those mountains for hours without seeing another vehicle. This is the area recently featured in Klavdy's post.
Unless you get to ride in other parts of the world, a couple of days riding around Victoria's High Country is an experience you will never forget and guaranteed to bring a smile to your face every time up you think about it, even in 20 years time.
Autumn in Vic is the best and most reliable riding weather anywhere.

Harvy, all points of the compass rally in the High Country? You bet!

Although the weather is forecast for 24C (75 F)and clear blue skies, I had considered trailering the bike up and just roll it into the car park when I get there. This eliminates the risk of a breakdown and allows me to travel in comfort so I arrive fresh.

I have been called condescending more than a dozen times in the last year or so by forum members (who are clearly beneath me and whose names aren't even worth remembering). Nothing could be further from the truth.  Any locals attending this great event who would like to decide for themselves and meet me in the flesh, I will be holding an autograph session at 10.00 sharp followed by a brief photo opportunity, but only if my PR people deem you sufficiently photogenic. If you have trouble finding me, just follow the crowd.

I know "Empirical Man" will be bitterly disappointed at missing this opportunity but probably wouldn't have made the photo cut anyway.

Sheesh, condescending? Where do they get this stuff?

Having been unable to attend the recent rallies, it would be great to meet up with some fellow members.

For lovers of our era bikes, this weekend is as good as motorbike porn gets.

Yes,  well I was hoping to get to do the above at our meet in Grafton recently, but it wasn't to be.  :cray:

Your quite right Frank, roadside innovation is indeed a skill. That bit of lateral thinking not only got us home, but on time.

We'll catch up one day Ray. Grafton was just too far away with the sort of time I can generally take off, a three day ride each way. Not that that's any hardship, but difficult being away for a week and half when locked into a very specific time.
When I go away for rides I pick a date and when the opportunity arises somewhere around that time, I grab it, could be a week earlier or a week later. I nearly always ride alone so it doesn't matter.

If next years rally location is a little more central it will make it easier.

I could always trailer it and just drive straight through. I drove Melbourne to Noosa once non stop in about 19 hours IIRC. Back in the days when you could drive with your foot to the floor all day and night.

Let's hope the stars are aligned at the next rally, it would be great to meet you.

It was a great shame I couldn't make it to Jindabyne.

I met up with Doug and Arnie en route yesterday morning and rode to the Broadford Historic bike races. Excellent day.

Glen (Chromeaxe) who, despite his menacing moniker, is a lovely bloke, and his charming wife Nicole, turned up on their way back from Wangaratta. This takes the grand total of forum members I have met to 3 and a half.

Doug, not surprisingly, has wangled and invite in to the commentary box this morning, after which I'm meeting up with them for a ride to lunch through some of the beautiful country around there.

Yesterday I noticed Doug taking a picture of a very ordinary looking tree and asked why. They don't have "Autumn" colours in QL!

I will leave the photos and the event report to Doug.

Aaaaahh, Victoria in Autumn, is there any better place in the world to ride.

Pete, I could take that as yes, somewhere in Victoria is the best place to ride...or...yes there is a better place?

If it is the latter, could you please expand, I'm going on a four day ride later this month in northern Vic/Southern NSW around the Snowies.

Well here is a confession......that was the first time I've been to the Broadford complex.....unreal... A brilliant day, great to catch up with Doug, Arnie and Noel. The track is something else but the thing that was most surprising was the height changes around the track, Turn 1 was a real challenge to a few of those Pre-1963 machines, and a few of the later Pre-1975's as well. The ride back up to Wang was a great finish to the day - Mansfield-Whitfield Rd is just the best.
The High Country 2016 - sounds good.....

Well, what a weekend!...just a continuous 3 days of mind boggling fun. Pics don`t do it justice so will post some awesome noisey videos later.

Arnie & Francis were the perfect hosts, supplying Cosy accommodation Friday & Sunday nights, Wine, gourmet Meals, Wine, beer....oh, and a nicely set up pink striper for a run through the valleys (The long way) to The Broadford motorcycle complex.
Noel joined us along the way and I must say I was really impressed with the topograthy, roads and all those quaint trendy villages.
I`ve been back home only one day and I still keep pinching myself to ensure it wasn`t a dream.....Sooooo much beautiful machinery, great comraderie and yeah, we even ended up in the commentary box for a birds eye view of proceedings.

The dinner on Saturday evening was hosted by Alan Cathcart and totally entertaining.  As a highly respected third person that travels the world commentating on motorcycle racing and it`s industry, he described the Broadford Bike Bonanza as totally unique in many respects. 1. All disciplines represented at the one complex. 2. the Property is owned outright by The Motorcycle Assoc. 3. It is dedicated to the grassroots of our industry as reflected by the families and machinery on the track. (over 1150 bikes had been entered for track participation.).....He confirmed there`s nothing like it anywhere in the world!

Fantastic that Glenn & Nicole could join us on Saturday. I can tell you I felt the pressure of persuavive discussions on the benefits of Rally riding in that neck of the woods leading to the Victorian high country. Party buses towing FJ ladened Car trailers cutting a suave of debaucherous trails across three states got my interest....esp when they mentioned the constant smell of Bundaberg accompaniements paid by the Victorians!!....but it was the whiff of race fuel, the booms of old fashioned thumpers, the deep thunderous bellowing of Vincents unleashed & mixed with shrieks from two strokes in labour that got my focus back on track....literally!...Only posted Road Racers here but there were heaps of vintage Motocross, Speedway, Short Circuit & Trials machines along with a swap meet.

Ahhh, so that's what the Broadford event is all about, looks like one to put on the calender! Your head would have been swivelling on ball bearings with all that machinery around you Dougie. :good2:
