Title: Is this the elusive wheel I need?
Post by: GhostMerc on March 17, 2015, 01:37:20 PM
It says 87-90, but I don't think that's right.  Is this the wheel for the swap?

I've got '91 forks, and 2005 R6 calipers ready to go.  Once I get the wheel, I'll be ordering up some discs and a new skin to get her on the street as soon as possible.

The wheel that is needed for the direct swap is specific to '87-'88 only. It uses 15mm axle diameter.
The '89-up front wheel used a 17mm axle diameter.
You should probably contact the seller to make sure his bearings are for 15mm axle.

Yup, what he said. I bought the '89, and drilled my forks to accommodate the 17mm bearings, axle and speedo gear that I was forced to source. It really wasn't too bad of a hassle, and the bike looks and rides great.

I can't tell if the wheel is painted gray, or that the paint has been removed and we see the bare aluminum that is weathered. The '87/'88 FZR wheels that drop in are OEM painted White or Red. The '89/'90 wheels came gray and silver.

I do see the cast mark 'F-42'. My 1987 FZR750R front wheel has that same cast mark.

Maybe ZOA NOM and FJfools can address what 'F' castings are on their '89 and '91 wheels.

I think my '89 wheel has the F-42 as well, but it's definitely 17mm axle. I'll run out and verify once I choke down my lunch.

Yup, found the F-42 stamp on the edge of the rim. Here's a pic showing the blue dots and castellated nut on the end of the 17mm axle.

Looks like it was modded.  Stock FJ axle shaft is not cotter pinned in.  One of the EU guys failed or was dinged by an MOT inspector, the inspector claimed it had to be cotter pinned in. The EU guy had to take a service manual over to the inspector to prove that all it had was a cross bolt from the factory. Trivia..

My '87-'88 wheel has the F-42 casting as well. (I can't remember if I bought an '87 or an '88 wheel when I did the swap)  :scratch_one-s_head:

Yup, modded. I used a 17mm axle from a Yamaha XVZ12 VENTURE 1200 that I found on ebay, which was the perfect length.
