Title: mixture settings
Post by: twangin4u on March 12, 2015, 12:57:58 PM
I got '84 1100. My mixture is set at 2.5 out on 1&4. 2.75 out on 2&3. I believe Yamaha suggests only 2 turns out but it feels like she's running too lean at 2.5 out. I'm thinking of going another half turn out. Is that normal?

Try it and see if it makes enough of a difference for you. You may have to jump pilot jet size. #40 or the next, to 42.5.  http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=Carb%3APilotjet&cat=39 (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=Carb%3APilotjet&cat=39)

If it "feels" like it's running lean, where's this happening when you twist your right wrist? Beginning, partial, half, full? At what RPM and gear?

Is your bike stock, if not, what are its exhaust and/or intake mods?

3 turns out is a good starting point.

Salt the soup to taste

If you get to 4 turns out it is time for pilot jets.

There is ethanol in the fuel now so the settings from the 80's are going to be lean. I run a K&N air filter and bumped the pilots 2 sizes and the mains 1. Bike loves it.
Buy the jets from Randy. He's a great guy and a big supporter.

I just got size 40's the other day but haven't had a chance to put them in yet. Next upgrade will definitely be ditching the air box cause that invention just plain sucks.

I totally agree, just had my carbs out again while trying to get mine going after its too long a hibernatation and putting them back in was the problem
I think those Uni Pods look good
