Title: Paint question
Post by: ADHD Perfected on February 19, 2015, 07:00:48 PM
Was just wondering my 87 FJ 1200 is the red, white and black. What Im askin is the red has medium red metal flake in it I do not recall seeing this on other FJ,s. Is this factory or not?

I believe the '86/87 had the metal flake in the clear coat. The paint colors are posted in the files section, I think all years and color options...

The '87 model year uses Stormy Red. The Colorrite paint is a two part paint. It should have a solid red base coat and the color coat has the metallic in it.

Are you sure about this guys?
I mean, metallic in the clear is NOT a common way of getting the sparkles in the paint.
The metallic is usually mixed into the red as part of the paint formula.

Not saying it can't be done, just not very common from my experience.

Leon, metallic in the clear coat has been used for years, my '86 CBR had it...

Re: Stormy Red: Negative on the metal flake in the clear coat.
The color uses 2 parts as Fred posted, base red and the color coat red with metal flake.
The clear coat is the 3rd coat (actually 4th if you count the primer) and is just that....clear.

I think my simian friend means color coat....not clear coat

I personally have not used the Stormy Red. I have used the Colorrite Silky White.

As Pat said, a 4 part paint.

Gray primer
White base coat (The white is very stark and has almost no shine)
Color coat (this is almost clear with the pearlescence)
Clear

I would imagine that the Stormy Red would be a similar formula. The base coat being a solid non metallic red and the color coat being translucent red with metal flake

No reason to spend the insane amount of money on Colorrite paint. There is a much cheaper way to do it, but you need someone who knows how to paint or willingness to experiment with a HVLP sprayer.

The paint codes I put up in that post were read off my '87 faring.  The black strip is actually a very dark blue.

Red color has flake in it and the white is a Tri-Coat paint.  Base coat, translucent mid-coat and then the top (clear) coat.  I had my chin faring repainted with paint mixed from those codes and it looks great.  Soon the rest of the bike will be re-painted using the same codes/paint.  A good paint supplier should be able to mix up touch-up sizes.

Shes finally coming home along with a clean bill of health.Still have lots to do but now I can get my own mitts on her. Galfer lines, clutch slave kit, 4fi shock and unbroken timing cover shouldn't take long to install.
