Title: Removed the rear sub-frame
Post by: Zwartie on February 16, 2015, 01:43:19 PM
Since it was a balmy -25C this morning I figured and I had the day off (Family Day in Ontario) I thought it would be a good opportunity to do a little work on the FJ. So I removed the rear sub-frame in preparation of installing a "new to me" one.

Here she is with the rear sub-frame removed:

And here are the two sub-frames beside each other:

The "old" sub-frame is missing the mounting bracket (or tab) for the left side muffler which is needed if I want to switch to a 4-2 exhaust. That, plus the right side rear turn-signal bracket has broken (again) so I will get them reinforced prior to installing the new rear sub-frame.

Fun little job. Did you already have the other subframe on hand?
That is a job I have to do as well, stick some weld around those indicator mounts!

I picked it up on ebay last year and just got around to working on it now. Of course the weather helps!

Progress Report - 2015-03-02

My colleague welded up the rear sub-frame to reinforce the turn-signal, I mean Givi luggage mounts. Here are a few pictures of the work and yes, I verified that there will be no clearance issues with the addition of the support/stabilizer rod.

The work was done by Achord Metal Products in London, ON. Gary (owner/operator) did a fantastic job! Next step - reassembly!

I don't see the reinforced turn signal brackets for the luggage racks.... Any details?

If you scroll up this thread to the March 2nd post you can see the additional welding and stainless steel rod connecting the two brackets which should help stiffen the brackets. The failure point on each bracket was where it joined the sub-frame tubing. Let me know if need any close-up shots and I can post a few more pictures.

Spent a a couple hours working on reassembly earlier this week and then finished it off with about 4 more hours this afternoon. She's finally back together!

Went for a ride to test things out and that's when things got a little interesting. I'll start another topic to cover that one...
