Fellow FJ riders,
I have a rebuilt rear shock with 20% stiffer spring up for grabs.. Travelled only 250 clicks before I purchased a new one off randy RPM..
It actually worked really well (obviously not as well as Randy's) but a fantastic improvement over the original unit. Rebuild cost me $450 (gas seals, recon shaft etc etc)....Then Randy brought out his and I had to have it. :nyam1:
So this one is sitting on my shelf looking for a home.
I am looking to swap it for new front springs if possible.. 0.8 rated. I have 0.9 and find them a bit hard..
So if anyone wants a new rear shock - I am happy to swap for new front springs

Following on from this, I now have this rebuilt shock from Darran, (Dayta originally). Even though mine was also rebuilt by RAD approx 10 years ago, there is a big difference in the spring winding, and even though the newly rebuilt shock spring looks thinner than the old one, it really isn't. (13.5mm vs 13.8mm, old one). But, this shock along with the different ride height from the shortened bones, makes the back end a much better match for the RPM equipped forks. Very nice through all sorts of riding, no more THUD THUD from the back, it actually responds properly. Spring Preload position 5, Damping adjuster 6 clicks out.

Your newly rebuilt shock has a spring on it with only about 4 1/2 turns
The original dirty shock has a spring with about 5 1/2 turns
Even though we don't know exactly the spring coefficient of the steel in both springs, the 4.5 turn new one will be at least 20% higher in rating. Enjoy your new improved ride.
Arnie your knowledge knows no bounds. The new shock does have a 20% stiffer spring rate fitted, right on the money, :good2:

They must've put a different spring on your original shock as well when they rebuilt it Ray, as it's got more coils on it than my old standard one. Here's a pic of my old one against the Hagon I bought a while ago. Notice the extra length of the Hagon, made the arse a bit higher without using shorter dog bones.

Good comparison Tony. Baldy and I went for a 10% heavier spring when we had them done ages ago. Gotta say, those Hagons still look well built.

Glad to see your first impressions were favourable.
I too just got my rear shock re valved and 20% stiffer spring put on at RAD. For $360 I think it money well spent .
With only a short 50klm run so far I am very impressed. The ultimate test will come in the next few days at the rally.. loaded 2 up .
I don't think it will be a problem as there is still plenty of pre load and dampening adjustments to be made.

Just an update to this...
After 3000kms on this rebuilt shock I am still very happy.
While others bounced along 2 up at the rally. Our rear sat rock solid and soaked up some very rough roads.( and I still had more adjustment )
Solo riding in the twisties is a dream now . Holds a good line ,soaks up bumps well even when leaned over mid corner.
As they say you only know the best you have ridden. I have to say this is the best set up rear on a FJ I've ridden and there has been a few...
Value for money I would have to give it :good2:

Me too! I got my FJ Ohlims done there (yet to be tested), but also the little shock on the sidecar recently, including a rechrome of it`s shaft.. I left it on soft (cause I`m basically lazy) and took Ken for a run in it!
Some consecutive speed humps encountered at the end of a high speed zone bottomed her out, but left no leaks and performance is still great!....not sure about Ken`s! :drinks:
