Title: Strange auction- 3.5" rim for FJ?
Post by: MOTOMYSZOR on February 05, 2015, 01:35:36 PM
Today I found rim for FJ:

3.5" rim from FJ1200? Or previous owner modded front wheel, and now someone  sells it as original?

I have found that many FJ's have been modded and when they hit the wreckers they don't know the difference and sell them as stock parts.
This usually leads to getting a great price on a hard to find part.

We know that if it's the oem FJ 17' rim, it's only 3" wide, so, what is it? Is it a 3" wide rim or is it a 3.5" wide rim?

Ask the seller to send you a picture of the casting numbers. We can then tell you.

Buyer beware. I see a red flag on this one.

It could be an honest mistake on the sellers part, if you measure across a 3" rim, the OD is 3.5"

Ask if there is a cast number of 'F42' on the wheel. That is the tell tale number that it came from a '87/'88 FZR1000/FZR750R

Looks like they are using this as an indicator:

When I was trying to find a 3.5in Fzr rim last year I had a wrecker send me a photo of 3 different rims he had all supposedly 3.5 and a straight swap for the FJ, one of them was an actual FJ rim and when I increased the size of the photo it was clearly stamped 3.00 inch, as Pat said see if you can get a clearer photo of the rim so that you can read what is stamped on it.

Oops, they already show the casting numbers...my mistake. Looks like a 3.5" rim to me. I'd buy it.

Several years ago I saw an ad for an FJ back wheel on eBay, there was just one photo of the whole bike and it showed a 17" rear wheel and underslung caliper. Although listed separately, I bought the brakes and the wheel for $180.
It turned up the next day by courier crudely wrapped in cardboard and tape. I couldn't believe it when I opened it up. He had just pulled the bolt on swing arm and sent the whole thing, already mounted, good sprocket, brakes, modified brake arm, lug already welded to the swing arm, it even had the M/C and hose attached, I didn't even have to bleed the brakes, just bolt it in and ride away.
It got better, it had a Michelin PR2 on it that was so new it looked like he had pranged it on his way home from the tyre shop. At the time one of those was nudging $300.

The seller believed it was just a standard FJ wheel, not worth much!  I know this because he offered to send me another one he had that was already out of the bike and could deliver it sooner. I insisted I wanted the one in the photo.

Sometimes you just get lucky.

I would still look for the F42 casting. A 1989/1990 17"x3.5" FZR1000 front wheel will have a F45?? The F42 is important, as the '89/'90 FZR wheel uses a 17mm axle and the bearing housing on the wheel is of a different diameter and OEM FJ bearings for a 15mm axle will not fit into the '89/'90 wheel.

Title: Alan front fork with a snag
Post by: gonzajr on February 21, 2015, 11:20:45 PM
Hello Alan I read about the overhaul last September; nice work  i am getting all the parts for a front suspension transformation from an 86 front fork to the 89 fork for 276.00 on ebay.  I am looking at the front wheel on your FJ, and I am wondering if that is an F42 3.5 wheel and are the rotors 298mm with the offset 9.5. What about the speedo drive the FJ speedo part # for the 86 is 3m-525190-10-00 and the 1990 FZR F42 wheel part# speedo drive 4x8-25190-10-00 is this a problem i will need to work out.
Now the FJ 89 wheel and the 1990 FZR wheel are the same part#. That maybe what you have newer than 88 model and the speed was not a subject. Right at this point the rotors and gear are on my mind to get this completed yes i am installing blue dots from Yamaha R6 R6s and hoping the master has well; and that just the front. I have the 180/55/17 rear wheel and the three spacer for the back axle and the F4I rear shock so for little over 600.00 only think i need to get in my possession are rotors flat or offset not sure and that speedo drive not sure.
