:good2: Great job Andy. You are gonna love the way your Fj handles now. And brakes, you got brakes...2 fingers is all ya need now. Your FJ is smiling and happy now. When your Fj is happy, you are happy.

And wishing you a Merry Christmas from the winter wonderland. :drinks:

Cheers...Jake

Arr yes the bitter sweet story of bike ownership. Lessons learnt, alternative parts located - thanks George B. - and another few hours of fettling before the joy of an Fj christmas mod session can be truly concluded.

File your new tires a bit, else you'll be sorry

Great editing and video work as usual Andy - well done!

Also, don't forget to thank "FJ Modifiers Anonymous" for the rear end conversion.

(for those who don't know what "FJ Modifiers Anonymous" is)

Been there, done that.  New tires on the XJ650 SECA -- thinking to myself I'd have to take it easy in the twisties and scuff in the tires.  Sitting at the stop sign leaving the neighborhood, see a gap in traffic and goose it good like I'd normally would and out went the rear end.  A little old lady stops the car, rolls down the window and says "you should be more careful young man" and drives off!  Lessson learned!  ANd remembered to this day!

I got lucky - not even a scratch on me self.
Like Casey, I too went for a walk after the event to clear the head. Except I walked a mile to Golden Bagel, which was most settling.
Anyway, I hot footed it to Sacramento and met up with George Bowers who had all what I needed to make her happy again.
Tomorrow I take a file to the tires - both I think for good measure and then, at last, a test ride.

A quick wipe down with paint thinner is all you need. I do it every time I change out the tires and have never had to worry about breaking in a tire. At the fall rally attended by Marsh, Pat, L.A.Mike, and some schmuck from the underbelly of the world I started the weekend with a tire that had 0 miles and had only rolled from my garage to the trailer. If you know marsh, I don't need to tell you how long we took it easy that first ride.

Andy,

A job well done...  I'm very impressed!   As long as your recovery is going well.  Sorry to have missed the San Mateo bike show, I'm kicking myself.  But have had too many obligations tugging at me.   Let's make it happen next time.

Peace, Craig

Andy, shmick looking job mate.  :good2:
It appears to me that both your front and rear rims are the same pattern.
i.e. solid, slanted, three spoke design.
I also noted the speedo cable is still hooked up.
So I'm curious to know which rims you used for this swap.
Cheers.

With ref to the rims:
The front's an Fj 1200 '89 (hence speedo still drives off the wheel) (well observed)
The rear's a YZF 600 (year unknown)(came to me from "modifiers anonymous": those mystery persons somehow connected to this forum who have occasional cool giveaways)

Luck has it, they are the same design (perhaps a lazy R and D fellow at Yamaha or the thought that it's a pretty cool wheel design anyway so lets keep it in the catalogue).

Reports on my first and somewhat careful ride out on the new michelin road pilots are so far so good. She's solid and I didn't feel as if I was working hard to keep things pointing in the right direction.
Next outing I'll be a bit more positive and hence aware of differences where it counts.

I'll probably write a summary for the mods files, so people can replicate should the desire take a hold.

This is my conversion:

(Ignore the first 5 pics.)

My wheel is from a GSXR1100 ('92).

http://fiche.ronayers.com/Index.cfm/Module/Main/TypeID/26/Type/Motorcycle/MakeID/2/Make/Suzuki/YearID/33/Year/1992/ModelID/6211/Model/GSX-R1100/GroupID/252471/Group/REAR_WHEEL (http://fiche.ronayers.com/Index.cfm/Module/Main/TypeID/26/Type/Motorcycle/MakeID/2/Make/Suzuki/YearID/33/Year/1992/ModelID/6211/Model/GSX-R1100/GroupID/252471/Group/REAR_WHEEL)

The disk was still on the wheel.

Other parts are from a GSXR750 - brake bracket, sprocket, spacers, and the brake itself from a GSX750F.

Two large washers each side.

Do like the GSXR caliper.
What size rear tyre did you decide on?
Title: Re: 17 inch conversion
Post by: billwest on December 26, 2009, 08:00:16 PM
I went for a 170 x 60 tyre.
180 x 55 will fit, but the 170 is actually a little taller.
Also fitted a 40-tooth Suzuki sprocket.

Looks like we have the same tire, but very different gearing. I ended up putting an 18 on the front to give a bit more swingarm clearance and a 46 on the rear.
Not really tested it thoroughly, but it's on the lively side.
Nice

Nice to hear from you John. Your bits and pieces have found a very functional and happy home as you can see on the vid.
Hope all is well up North and that you're well on the way to funding a new bike project. As you know, there are many riders who make it their life's quest to scan all sources for Fj sales and post them on the forum. There's one out there for you somewhere. Keep squirreling away those pennies and all will turn out fine.
Check out Marsh's new rally site - he' done another stand up job with that. The west coaster is but months away - be awesome if you could make it. However, I forecast it'll be equally great in 2011 and probably marvelous in 2012, so plenty of time really.
