Merry Christmas to you all and I hope everone has a great 2010.
Colin
Yeah like 2010 - it sounds so spacey and modern.
My Fj will be 24 years old.
Wonder if she'll be running in 2020
My question is this: right now it is perfectly acceptable to call the year "Oh Nine" but should we say "Oh Ten" or just "Ten" or should we be all formal like with "Two Thousand and Ten".
Just for once I want to be one of the cool kids and get it right.

i'm personally going with "Ten"...... since most just use the last two of four digits..... i really cant see people going with "one oh".....in that theory the following years.... "eleven" "twelve" then we're in the teens...that is unless the Mayan's were right. :hang1:
KOokaloo!

Hey! I just bought one...for my wife. But it is actually pretty damn cool I must say! 8 hour battery life - LED backlit screen - Windows 7. I'll totally steal it on my next Rally trip and throw it in the trunk so I can keep in touch with you clowns! ;) It does full video Skype calls with Klavdy pretty good too...

Happy holidays and all that merry stuff to all my FJ brothers! Hopefully I can get motivated enough to move the bike down here in Flatland. Since I am now totally spoiled with riding up in the mtns, I don't even want to sit on the bike down here. How soon is Boone?
Oh and today's weather report....highs in the 70's.

Hey Marsh,
Did ya get an ASUS ? I bought one last year before our big western trip and it worked like a champ.... especially since i can do internet sharing with my cell phone... pretty much get online anyhere i have coverage.
The extended play on the battery life is phenominal compared to other laptops i have owned for sure! :good2:
KOokaloo Christmas!
Frank
I got this one:

$350 at Costco. The only negative thing they could say about it is the buttons for the touchpad are on the sides of the touchpad - instead of the bottom. Doesn't bother me at all. I did quite a bit of research - the internal specs are the same as most every other Netbook out there.
However; it is literally one of the only Netbooks with Windows 7 from the factory - and the big kicker is the LED backlit screen (though several other Netbooks DO now have this feature - this is the only one where I could find them together). Plus it has a new HP software interface where it will boot up in literally 2 seconds where you can browse the net, Skype, play music, play videos, etc....all without running windows. Pretty neat actually!
Think I'll keep my asus 1000HE... though it's now sporting a 32g SSD, 2g ram, and a fancier wireless card with additional antennas, with Ubuntu linux (desktop, not the stupid netbook remix variant). Hard to beat it in my eyes... got the wife one for xmas, because every time I turn around she's stolen mine!!
One of the first things I did was blow the OEM OS off of it (XP home sp3). I'd be unlikely to make a decision based on what OS comes on it, actually would have been happiest had it come blank, so I could save the liscensing fees and had my choice.

i also bought the triple E 1000HE (and hot rodded it) but alas i find the video playback performance to be lacking.....maybe i'm asking too much for HD porn on the road? :unknown:
Marsh, how is the video playback on the little HP? there is supposed to be a new generation of video chip out there but i dont know who is using it currently.
i drive with a microsoft BT mouse, those little touchpads are very awkward for me.

Where did you get your SSD?
I'm looking at getting one for my EEE900 (or 'Hello Kitty', as BUFF Bill calls it) :pardon:
Mine runs Debian Linux just fine... the OEM Ubuntu sucked very much badly.

Or didn't read the fire warning on the label.
Chinese knockoffs.

Ebay, heh.
Stock shouldn't have been ubuntu, I thought it was Xandros? Ubuntu isn't terrible, just has a couple of mild issues yet. EEEBuntu is actually probably the best way to go, a lightly modified fork that includes all the drivers and such optimized for the eee.

Ahhhh, yer right. It was Xandros... really crappy. I tried to install Ubuntu, but it was a no go. Ended up with a Linux guru friend of mine, and between us we figured out all the voodoo to make it work. Learned (and now forgot) way more Linux than I ever cared to. Would rather have had Tiny XP...
Anyway, the thing is ideal for bike trips and keeping in my locker at work. Free WiFi is a good thing! :good:
