my 91 inner black left and right side fairing plastics have both suffered stains from brake fluid spillage. Aside from buying new, and with no luck finding sensible priced and conditioned used ones...is there any process for making them look better that anyone has found?
marker?
wrapping?
some kind of wet sanding?
thanks in advance,
Don
I painted mine with professional gloss black rustoleum. Nice and shiny again.
I cleaned them really well with Sunlight soap and water and used black Plastidip.
Do not get the shine like gloss but does leave a nice finish and (I have not tried) is removable.

ABS and Dot3/4 are not friends. You could try sanding and polishing, it will depend on how deep the Dot3/4 went. I recommend a good cleaning and paint. I spilled Dot3 on my RH vent panel and quickly sprayed it with bake cleaner... :dash2: :dash2: :dash2: Now it needs sanding and paint....

"back to black"
i am working one of mine with this product
probly will not be the cure but, it is helping
either way, ALL of us should have this product in their garage- it friggin rocks!
i'm not sure if you could ever recreate the factory finish- i think it is right out of the mold
possibly some type of media blasting or possibly vapor blasting
there are a couple of pretty interesting textured paints specifically made for bonding to plastic, home depot stuff, i dunno, i haven't tried any yet
that brake fluid sure is a bummer
"Aside from buying new, and with no luck finding sensible priced and conditioned used ones"
yeah, i know what you mean
i just dropped $120 on the right side "vent" panel new for my '86, figured i better get one before it is discontinued- heh, took them a few weeks to find one to ship as it is
i share your frustration
someone on another forum referred to these old irreplaceable body parts as "Unobtanium" - yup, works for me
If all else fails consider some Black Bumper Restoration paint , designed for plastic and flexable. I had a small spot on mine cleaned. sanded with some 1500 grit wet or dry and used some rubbing compound then polished. The Bumper paint would be quicker. https://www.duplicolor.com/products/bumperCoating/ (https://www.duplicolor.com/products/bumperCoating/) or similar.
I have used it on bumpers and it works good. Auto parts stores usually stock it.

George, no "if all else fails", this is
the stuff. K&H was the best until they were bought out and shut down and Duplicolor my least favourite, I have recently been using VHT with good results.
This really does return plastic trims to OEM finish, in some cases better.

This mirror was smashed up. The paint is sprayed directly over bog and spray putty, no primer or undercoat. The finish is not quite as shiny as the photo suggests and less so on rubber, to me it has the perfect sheen level, it is after all what it is made for. Ask and detailer how they restore plastic and rubber finishes.
Just a quick wash and spray it on.

Don't toss your old ones out! they are ABS plastic and can be welded and repaired to look new again. Keep any broken pieces as well, it makes the repair process quicker.
agreed absolutely. i was thinking of learning that craft possibly. must be some good youtube learn-hows on it...
