Title: Fork Protectors
Post by: ken65 on November 15, 2014, 07:33:04 PM
G'Day,
Just knocked up some fork protectors out of some PVC pipe, just wondering if anybody could measure theirs from top to bottom so mine aren't to long and bump into anything under braking,,

Thanks in advance , ken

Mine measure to 3" above the top of the lower fork leg............................they don't contact anything up under there.

Geez Ken, how do you ride in that, 30c is too hot for me. I hate riding in Summer. Give me an Arctic blast in the middle of Winter any day.

Pretty nifty Ken. Are they held on by anything or just slip over the fork legs. Might try it myself

They look tapered...?  They do need to be able to be raised up so you can get in there and clean the seal face.

Too bad they won't work with a fork brace....and with 41mm tubes on a fully loaded FJ, you do need a brace.

Still, a very cool application. :good:

Speaking of which, does anyone have a problem with the brace hitting their fairing?

The brace itself, no.
The bug shields on my Superbrace, yes. I had to do some Dremel work on the fairing of my '92
That's with 1.0kg/mm straight rate springs.

If I had those soft OEM fork springs, yes, I can easily see the brace contacting the lower fairing.

Nice job Ken.

Yep it's a balmy 43 degrees here today, I think even Randys oil cooler would have a hard time cooling the beast today. Everything is hot to handle. Just in the shed fitting up he rest of the Givi rack, and even though the parts have been in the shade, the heat soak on these parts is incredible. Stuff summer, give me winter anytime.

Won't they hit on the bottom of the triple tree Ken, I put a zip tie on the forks before the last ride to measure suspension travel, and the zip tie ended up about half an inch under the triple tree.

On my 92 I have Race Tech .85kg straight rate springs and my arse end is raised 2 inches. my brace does not hit the fairing.

Ok here's a pic of them, the internal measurement of the pipe was about 53mm from memory. I cut out abit of a slot so they can slip over the stanchion then onto the slider, its a firm fit but i will still use a zip lock on them.  I cant test it yet as i dont have any brakes on the bike, but will report back.. I may have to modify them to work ,worst case scenario ive blown 20 cents worth of pipe..

I wouldn't let that stop you. No pun intended.

Brakes, are highly overrated.

you were right Tony, didn't even look like working . Anyway i couldnt be bothered experimenting. For now i will track down an old fork gator like this , cut it in half and put half on either side.

Thats an interesting concept Fred, hard to tell but the protector bit would be about 2" or so. They'd have to work, .  Might trim mine after all and see.

Oh wow. Those are brilliant. I don't know about the quality of the oil seals, but that dust seal is kickass!

i think the ones that fred put the link to are the fork protector which is incorporated with the dust seal, not just a stand alone fork protector that you sell..

I cut another 1/2 " off the top of my pipe ones, made no difference.  Stupid bloody things..
Title: Re: Fork Protectors
Post by: Bones on November 19, 2014, 03:00:52 AM
Ken, If you trim them back so they don't go around the fork so much they should be ok. You only basically need a flat part on the front for protection and that'll clear the triple tree on suspension compression.

ok tony, i understand were your coming from, i'll give it a crack tomorrow and see how it goes..

ken.

as an aside..  i was told that my bike looked like it was down low on the rear suspension.(FAT PRICK). Alas i adjusted my rear from 2 to 5 and it sorted most rear end hassles that i'm aware of... .. then i fitted new front fork seals and new 10w fork oil. . the black sludge that came out of the sliders felt like a slap in the face to me in as far i really need to up my maintenance regime, as  just with couple of adjustments my bike has been transformed.

well Tony i took your advice about narrowing the front,,, ,   it works well,    i will post up some pics just later, waiting for the paint to dry... with your brains and my looks, we could corner the south east QLD market.. then the world....ha

That is exactly why I thought these were SO AWESOME. I have a set of the ones that Randy sells, but you can't use his with the fork brace. These, because they are incorporated into the dust cover will work if you have a for brace installed.
