Title: Hello from South Carolina
Post by: vandy on October 14, 2014, 06:37:48 PM
Original owner of an '87 FJ1200 with about 27,000 miles. All original except for a Corbin seat and Lockhart sport rack. I've gotten a lot of good information off of this site already and am already planning some updates/fixes.

I had an '86 Radian for a few years, and when the kids came along the FJ got shoved to the back of the garage. It was such a pain to get it out I didn't do a whole lot of riding for several years. Bought a new 2012 ZX14R last October and I have about 3000 miles on it. When I bought the ZX14R the FJ sat outside for about 6 months until I could make room in the garage for both bikes, and now it doesn't want to idle unless the choke is out a couple of clicks. I guess it's time for its first carb cleaning.

With the current gas the carbs are gummed up....

Yep, a good carb cleaning and the RPM carb o ring and ss screw kit would be a good choice.

If you have the luxury of getting eathnol free gas in Charleston, do that. Your carbs will thank you.

Tell us what your impressions are on your ZX14R....that is a bitchen bike.....Piss my pants fast.

Welcome to the group.  :hi:There are a few original owners here. Always good to here about another.

I am originally from South Carolina, (Beaufort). I will be there for Christmas this year and I am bringing the FJ with me. Maybe we can get a ride together.

Found some ethanol free gas just down the road from the house and filled it up this weekend, then went for about an hour ride. It seemed to run better but still wouldn't idle without the choke. Thanks for the suggestion. Will order the kit from RPM soon.

What can I say about the ZX14R? The first thing I really noticed (before it was broken in) was how powerful the brakes were compared to the FJ. Like night and day. Brakes have come a long way in 25 years! The engine puts out power all across the rev range just like the FJ, only there is a whole lot more of it. It's pulls so hard at 100mph that it actually scares me. It's comfortable on the highway, less so around town because of the weight it puts on the wrists. I went to The Dragon a couple of months ago and did about 1000 miles in 3 days, and the only thing that was uncomfortable at the end of the day was my rear end.

Not sure I am going to be around here for Christmas but if I am Fred I'll let you know.
