Title: Mapleton Muster 2014
Post by: oz.fj on October 05, 2014, 07:40:39 PM

Come and stay for 1 or 2 nights at http://www.lilyponds.com.au/ (http://www.lilyponds.com.au/)  or just come for the day ride.

Saturday November 8 . Meet for breakfast at Mapleton View coffee shop just opposite    http://www.mapletontavern.com.au/ (http://www.mapletontavern.com.au/)

Then head off for a scenic ride through some of the twistiest roads in the Sunshine coast Hinterland. With a mystery lunch stop.

Me and Chris will be there Darran, weather permitting of course. Last years ride was great, looking forward to doing it again. We're lucky this time, we've got a daughter now living down the road at Yandina, so we can crash at her place for the night after the ride.
                                                       See ya then

That gives me 4 weeks to get the bike finished and registered. Probably wont have the gsxr wheel mod done by then but at least it will be a runner. Just the motivation I needed

If the stars align correctly for me I should be ok, but it will be only me as Alena will be taking Tessa to her school music group barbecue on the Saturday. (Something I should probably be attending as well) But we'll see. I'm also away the Thurs-Fri in Sydney, so will see how many brownie pts I can rack up B4 then.

Only thing is I won't have my roomie Richard staying in the Lodge with me this time,  :sorry:

G'Day Bones,  remember the big BP servo with all the junk food shops just before Burpengary that we meet last year on the way way to Doug's?

That would be a good place, just name time and i'll see you there.

Mmmm, BP junk food, yummo.  But it would be better not to buy rubbish at the BP and have something nice on the cafe deck at Mapleton,  :good2:
I can only stay the one night, (pushing for that even at this stage) so I'll meet you guys at the servo Sat morn as well.

Ken, Ray, can meet you at the servo around 7ish, I plan to leave home about 6.00 and it takes around 1 hr or so to get there. Slight change of plans my end, Chris is still coming up with me on the bike and having breakky, but then she's meeting up with the daughter and going to spend the day with her shopping.

Almost got it dash...."Tha difference between a dream and a goal, is a date!"
....and Yep, wouldn`t miss it for quids. I reckon it`s one of the best rides in Oz.(seriously!).

When combined with this laid back bunch of blokes, tha laziest brekky and sensational views it`s gotta be the best chill pill on planet Earth!!
Slippery Steve tells me he`s coming too!...Well worth the delightful cruise up from the Gold Coast esp if you`re a newbie or an oldie with a different brand of steed!

I`m hoping ta make the campfire following a little sojourn here! http://www.mapletontavern.com.au/ (http://www.mapletontavern.com.au/)

Hey Harv/Darran are ya gunna drop down thru that winding canopy of forrest than back up tha plateau ta stretch them gears before those long twisties and the trick leftie that put a few on the wrong side of yellow?  (Heehehe)

No Bike mobility, anyone? No worries, I can pick you up from any of tha the Railway Stations at the bottom of the mountains.....but you`ll need a really well fitted, muffled helmet to protect my ears!  :drinks:

We will be travelling clockwise from Mapleton. With a pit stop at  http://www.bellbirdcreek.com/menu.html (http://www.bellbirdcreek.com/menu.html) and lunch at The Cooroy Hotel.
Those that wish to call it a day after lunch can slab it down the HWY home or stay on for a quick trip up the Obi Obi back to Mapleton (Well worth the extra 20-30 minutes)

I'd be leaving from Chermside on the Saturday morning if there is anyone close by or can organise to meet up in Brisbane beforehand for the trip up. I dont mind waiting on the side of the highway if need be.   So i cant wait to finally put a face to the names and see what a FJ1100 is supposed to look like lol .  Bender

My tank got a pin hole in it. Lucky I had another one laying around.
Trouble is its been laying around that long the left over fuel had turned to varnish .
With quite a lot of surface rust inside. Only discovered this yesterday.
So its clean up time . Hopefully I'll get it done by Saturday .

Well after spotting the above post I decided to get my priorities straight.(Nothing like a bit of motivation)  :wacko2:
So I ditched work and got into cleaning the tank.

I used this method found in the files section .Rust in the fuel tank. (http://rust%20in%20the%20fuel%20tank.)
Only did the cleaning method .Didn't do the lining.
Unbelievable how much fine particles or rust came out.

So I'm good to go.

Really Really wish I could`ve stayed overnight. Thanks Darran for making it happen & Harv for being a quick, mindfull & safe pace setter.

After arriving at Mapleton I headed straight to the servo to top up on fuel and noticed the bike running rough like it was on three cylinders, at idle and when revved, and just assumed it was a bad plug even though they were fairly new, but decided to have breakky first and check it out later.

After breakky it was that bad it would hardly run, and I noticed the fuel pump wouldn't stop clicking no matter how many times I turned the key on and off, and realised then that the pump must have shit itself and couldn't build pressure,  :dash2: :dash2: so off with the tank and pulled the main line to the pump off and hooked it straight to the carbs and it started right up and ran like a train for the rest of the day. :good2:

Now for the ride, this would have to be one of the best rides around for scenery and twisty roads, and with Harvy leading and setting the pace, never boring. "That" corner up the Bellthorpe range continues to catch people out and this time caught Harvy's stepson off guard and he took it a bit wide and just clipped a flexible guide post, but full credit to him, he's only been riding about 3 months and had no worries at all keeping up on his Suzuki 500.

Lunch at the pub was tasty and cheap and that glass of beer really hit the spot.

Some pics at the pub.

After lunch everyone headed off home but Darran, LB, Ray, Glen, and myself headed back to Mapleton via The Obi Obi, and without a passenger and being one way knowing there's nothing coming the other way, had an absolute ball going up the range. Said farewell at the top and headed back to the daughters place for a few well needed beers. Looking forward to the next one. :good2:

Will post a video once I sort through all the footage.

How good is the countryside around Mapleton? I'm going back there soon, love it. It was great after brekky to head down to the bikes and before we could ride off, Tony gave everyone a hands on demo of "How To Bypass A Stuffed Fuel Pump", with only a length of fuel hose. Best thing was it worked, and Tony didn't even notice it missing for the rest of the day. Went though Connondale, stopped at Kennilworth for a breather after some highly illegal antics, then pressed on to Cooroy. The always lovely and happy Danielle met us at the pub, ( why wasn't she on the back of the bike with you Darran??) and after a bit of lunch and a cold beer, some of the crew headed home, and a few of us rode back to where we started at Mapleton.

It turned out Glenn and I were the only ones staying the night in Mapleton, so we went to the Tavern, had some nice beers, some nice food, then a few rums and scotches until closing time. The scotch did something with my eyes because as we were leaving there was a sudden loud rattling bang as my head slammed into the partly closed roller shutters over the doorway. Glenns first words were not of concern but "Ah shit wheres my camera?" We might have woken a few residents up as we laughed our heads off walking back to the Lodge where we were staying. I will also tell you bloody its bloody hard climbing up into the top bunk up a skinny little metal ladder when you are half smashed.  :drinks: (And then try to get down it again at 3.00am with a near overflowing bladder, lol!!!!)

Heading home, we decided against taking the quick way home down the boring highway, so went to Maleny, the hung a left and shot across the valley to Kilcoy, had a nice pie with coffee, and from there headed around Somerset Dam to Fernvale. We did chase a group of Harley riders some of the way, they were a bit slower through some of the twisty bits, (wonder why). Stopped again at Amberley near the RAAF base, for a drink, then 30mins later arrived home. 596kms for the weekend, ABSOLUTLEY LOVED IT.! Good as always to see everyone again, and new faces Stephen and Luke.  :good2:

Glad to hear everyone had a good time running round our back yard :good2:
It was a fantastic day. Great ridding, great scenery, great people.
Will defiantly be putting it on the calendar as a must do for next year :yahoo:

So If you are new around here and maybe a little hesitant about joining in on a ride /rally etc...
Don't be ... we always seem to get along and have a ball.
After all we already have something in common.

I love that photo of Rays with the locals admiring Doug's sidecar and the bird in the background trying to unlock her white ute with a coat hanger.

Yes she did.
I don't think it was her first time it didn't take her to long.

You wouldn't believe it. I had to go to Nambour and Mapleton/Maleny for work today, last call was in Maleny. Mmmm, travel back to the highway to head home or do the run again that Glenn and I did on Sunday heading home.

Of course I took the scenic route home from Maleny, doing the Kilcoy/Somerset Dam/Fernvale/Amberley run, and even though I was in the car it was still a ball. The crap in the back seat sliding across and banging from door to door in the twisties was hilarious. It's an extra 65kms and 35mins travel time to go that way, but it's worth every second.  :good2:

Should have videos of the run uploaded by the weekend. This one is going to be in three parts as there's more riding and scenic scenes in it than last year. Can only get about two hours out of the batteries so Kenilworth is as far as we got before going flat. Mmmm... will have to get the Obi Obi on film one day.

Even watching the videos now, I fell myself leaning over in my chair as the approaching vehicles are on the wrong side of the road...

That was the hardest part of all of the riding I had during my visit. The car on the other hand wasn't too bad. When you are sitting on the wrong side of the car, you have a constant reminder to drive on the wrong side of the road.

The bike on the other hand...

I enjoyed the videos.

Thanks, Randy - RPM
