Title: The Pulse
Post by: charleygofast on October 02, 2014, 07:07:16 AM
This came into Mauston Motorsports last week . It is a mid 80s Pulse it's powered by a V65 Honda Interceptor engine, has heat/air con. killer stereo, Ricaro seats and its overheating... I guess 5 radiators aren't enough! Anyway, its different!!!                                                                                                                                       Cheers,  Charley.

Well, it is red and white, so it must be fast! Bet it would be a blast to drive on an open road.

I never cared for vehicles like this, but its kinda neat, and built really well. When its problems are sorted out I'm gonna take her for a spin...more later.  :good2:

It's a 4 wheeled vehicle, right?  In the pic it looks like it has two outriggers, each containing much smaller diameter tires, correct?  If so, do they hover only to touch down when cornering, or are they contacting the pavement at all times.  It seems as though it would be hard to control, with the outriggers in their location. Top speed?

Looks cool enough!

Just did a little net browse on the pulse. The early ones were equiped with a yamaha 400 air cooled engine which didn't cool properly, the later ones with a goldwing 1100 engine. They were considered a trike, and licensed as a motorcycle, though they actually had 4 wheels, much like the voyager trike mods of today. Top speed on the 400cc version was just over 100mph. Design was by Jim Bede, designer of the Bede aircraft.

That is SO Logan's Run! (Or what was that other post-apocalyptic Saturday afternoon tv show from the 70's?)
I could see the Six-Million Dollar Man driving that.

I believe the "outrigger" wheels retract, or fold up at speed then down as speed decreases. Ill know more today as we dive into this beast. It is very airplane like in design and construction and this one is definitely v65 Int. powered...if only it had wings. Still, it ain't my cup o tea. I prefer two wheel and open air so I can bail out if necessary.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Cheers,                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Charley.

Okay, the wheels don't retract but are suspended so basically are for balance. Three wheels make contact with the road at all times. It was built for low drag and high M.P.G, I bet it sucks in snow...I don't want one! :negative:                                                                                                                                                             Charley.

If they did retract then it would seem they might have got their inspiration from the U-2.

Believe it or not, the U-2 has two wheels near its wing tips (like outriggers) that it ejects as it takes off.  Then, you're really not going to believe this, two jeeps carrying one wheel each, pace the U-2 upon landing, and insert them into the wing, so it can be pushed back into the hanger without it's wingtips touching the ground, such is the life of essentially a glider, with center line landing gear, and engine, that all but exhausts all of it's fuel just to get to it's mission altitude.

I don't know about you Charley, but riding my FJ is all but flying to me! ;)  If only I had an F-16 Hornet, or maybe an SR-71 Blackbird, now that would be awesome!  Kookaloooooooooooooooooooooo, ad infinitum!

If it were capable of of running on two wheels I think It would be okay in a straight line if there wasn't alot of side wind. I believe a good gust would blow it over as a Bonneville liner at slow speed. also cornering would be impossible without the body lean required to steer our two wheelers. They should have taken it a step further and made an airplane. To each his own I guess.

Yes my point, though somewhat cryptic, now that I look back at my previous, is that I agree with you, I don't like it :negative:.

It's a cross between too many things, like me, a jack of all trades, master of none.  I want my motor vehicle to be a master in it's own right.  I also wouldn't trust that thing either.  Like someone said, it would make a cool movie prop, from the 80's, or was Logan's Run from the 70's, wow it's been a long time. ;)
