Title: Noob/Lurker
Post by: ANGRYJOE on September 26, 2014, 11:17:43 PM
Picked up an FJ for my first bike a few months ago. Was shopping for a bike and I was looking for a cruiser but the FJ caught my eye and I fell in love.
It's a 1990 and it was from Cali originally I purchased it in Arizona. I am the 4th owner and it seems to be a bike that was ridden often but maintained well.

It has a jet kit and a Vance and Hines singe pipe. It runs really well but needs some attention. It is too rich and the mileage is awful. It needs a chain and could use for seals. I would also like to upgrade the brakes at some point as well.

I have been lurking here for some time getting info and ideas, lots of knowledge here...looking forward to getting to know you guys.

Welcome Joe! I have a 1990 like yours, well close anyhow.. Yours looks good. You will find lots of good members here.  Take some time and check the files out and read some posts. Lots of good information.  Ask questions as you go.  One thing on the MPG the FJ isn't a Prius :), it's a lot more fun.  :good2:

Welcome Joe, when you get ready to do your carbs, rather than trying to figure out what the PO put in.. just buy new pilot (#40) and main (#115 or 117.5) jets.
If it has a Dynojet kit, you will need to replace the skinny Dynojet needles and the soft Dynojet slide spring.

Randy @ RPM has everything you need at very good prices, so give him a call.... His jetting advice is spot on.

That is a beautiful bike you have. The colors of the '90's are bitchen.

Welcome Joe! Pats advice is spot-on, expect 40ish mpg max and much less if you Kookaloo alot! I also question the accuracy of the FJ fuel gauge. Get her right, dial her in and enjoy the ride. A much wiser choice than a Cruiser (IMO). Are you located in Az.? I lived in Tucson in 1981 and worked at Iron Horse B.M.W. I still miss that area and am considering "snowbirding" back there to escape WI. winters! Nice 90 you have, FJs are great bikes and as you can see by our forum their owners are quite loyal an put serious miles on them.                                                                                                                                                                                                      Cheers! :hi:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Charley.

Looks like you got yourself a very fine representative of the breed - great find, wonderful motorcycle.  I'm getting an honest 50 mpg with my '89 (pods and stock exhaust) in two-lane cruising (65-70 mph) and mid-forties around town with moderate kookaloo.

Thanks guys,

I currently reside in Tucson.

The bike runs strong, pulls real hard thru the gears but man it is pig rich...From my estimates I am getting about 22 -24MPG....The PO went way too big on the jet size IMO...I can smell raw fuel in stop and go traffic. I will look into the jets mentioned here once I get the chain and new gears put on. PO did include a carb tool with the purchase so I want to stab that on and make sure he balanced them properly.

I did toss the stock mirrors in favor of a set of 1990's Honda CBR mirrors but I don't love the way they look. Not bad and MUCH better view behind me...instead of my shoulders.

I am doing some clean up on it, removing PO installed paint, touching up some surface rust, de-greasing and replacing rough looking exterior hardware...It's a fun toy and a hell of a lot cheaper than building cars....so far.

I put 86 mirrors on my 89. The angle on the fairing puts the 86 stems almost flat, horizontal. Looks great. And moves the mirrors out. I have pretty wide upper body, and can see past great. It's perfect. I'm going to make dual monitors and cameras for the 86. And I was going to do the same for the 89. But it looks so good. I'm going to keep the 86 mirrors on the 89.

I'd like to see a pic of that if you don't mind...I am a wide body as well...50+ inch chest so the stock mirrors were totally useless...

Welcome Joe, any FJ is a fine FJ. I put CBR1000 mirrors on my 86' and can now see past my elbows without doing the FJ Samba. Keep posting, regular posters keep this place honest...

Hey Angry. I just measured my chest just under 56 right now (3xl jacket). And I took some pics holding the phone up by my eyes. Too try to show the view it's close. But I can see just a little sliver of my sleeve with my eyes. And that is no pulling in of the elbows.

I just learned how to post pics with my phone (no computer right now). And I broke it. Haven't figured out how to do it with this phone. If someone could post them that would be great. They are in the gallery in miscellaneous Fj photos. I took some of the bike front and rear too. So you could see how good it looks.

Angry sorry about hijacking your intro. Welcome. You're going to love the FJ...

Angry I think you can still get them new. Expensive though, around $100 apiece.

Thanks Fred, the 89 is starting to shape up.

Bill, my windscreen is the double bubble Honda blackbird, per Fred's write up(thanks Fred). That one had one of those eBay discounts, $19.97 delivered from China. The dash is a trail tech vapor $119 eBay. It's got tach, engine temp, shift lights. All kinds of stuff I'll never use. Speedo runs off a magnet. I drilled out a hex bolt and epoxied the magnet into it, to replace one of the rotor bolts. Also round digital fuel right, and digital voltmeter on left. Both blue on the 89. Red on my 86 fj1350r. Cut the Fj gauge bezel, so I still have all the stock idiot lights. And mounted the gauges to smoked Plexiglas painted the backside with flat black. And put on the kookaloo sticker, gold on 89, red on the 86.
