Title: Calling all 84/85 owners
Post by: racerrad8 on September 10, 2014, 01:39:00 PM
I need some information from all of you 84/85 FJ1100 owners. A customer bought a set of Vibranators recently and the customer determined his bars were filled with what he believes as aluminum and the damper portion of the Vibranator would not fit.

If possible, I need all of the 84/85 owners to check their handlebars to see if they are filled with a material such as aluminum or lead like these are:

Just checked my '84.  Hollow all the way through.  No filled or plugged insides.

You should extend the years to 1987. Same handlebars used '84 through '87.

Okay, everyone up to 87.

My curiosity might be the fact Yamaha could have made some that were filled in 84 & 85 but went away from it in the later years, even though the part numbers are all the same through those years.

I can say this much, of my five 84-86 FJ's none of them are filled, so that is why I am asking.

Randy,

I installed Vibranators in my 1985 FJ1100 with no problems, so the bars on mine were hollow.

Cheers,

Hollow here.

In the '80s, to reduce vibration, it was a common practice to fill the hollow space up with ball bearings or lead shot, also to cut down a "bar snake" into 2 pieces and put them in each bar.

What this fellow has is some sort of aftermarket fix for bar vibrations. Certainly not stock.

The regular bar snake wouldn't really work on the FJ bars Pat as it needs 2 open ends so you can pull it through. That being said you can use the liquid Bar Snake. I went that route but it didn't do really anything in regard to reducing vibration. The Vibranator system made a noticeable difference. :good:

My Aussie delivered '85 is also hollow. Sounds like the work of a PO to me!      Pete.

I reckon someones filled it up with lead, easy enough to do and easy enough to drill out.

I've sometimes picked up a subtle whistling sound when you ride.  This may explain that.

It's a high pitched sound that is difficult for the human ear to detect. Works like a deer whistle... its his built in safety device...

Too bad that the tone does not affect pine cones, they are more likely to take a bike down than deer in my part of the twisties...
