Title: Can someone please steer me towards a better clutch M/C?
Post by: Tuneforkfreak on August 25, 2014, 07:42:37 PM
Just spent the last 3 hours in Yamahell  trying to bleed the clutch system only to have it start leaking out the plunger again. After spending $30.00 on a M/C rebuild kit only to find out the housing is probably worn out it's discouraging to say the least. At this point I need to replace it but is there something  of a bit newer design that I can use? I don't really care for this stock design so much and would prefer something a bit more trust worthy. Would appreciate any guidance.  Man I wanted to ride tonight :dash1:

It worked for 24 years....

Pretty much any 5/8 master (16mm) should work.

A shindy/ Nissan master would work very well if you like the pee cup look....

I believe RPM carries these.

I have used the nissin aftermarket masters on a few projects and have been very happy with the quality and performance

Just about any hydraulic M/C will work. Check the size of the bore (usually cast into the body) to make sure its the same as the one you're replacing.  Only other caution is that the "safety" switch should work the same and have the same connector.
I'm using a Kawasaki clutch unit and had to modify the switch, but there are many others that are 'plug and play'.

I have been using a set of Honda VFR800 master cylinders for well over a year now. They work great, they are readily available on eBay and I like the fluid window facing the rider. Here is the link for the mod write up.

I too am using the VFR style M/C. Mine are from Dawn Knights and work really well. They offer several styles but I recommend if you order from them you get the unpainted ones, mine had paint in the reservoir and required cleaning. Also you might have to wait a couple of weeks for delivery.                                 Charley.

Thanks for the guidance everyone.  I've never been up against what would seem to be such a simple bleed job. For me the vacuum pump was a must and i still had a problem removing the air.  I found a different MC on line last night for a kaw, looks to be of the same layout but I'll have to rework the switch which should be straight forward.  BTW I'm not hating on the F J MC  by all means, I just don't care for how the lever interacts with the plunger not allowing adjustment of free play.  Hopefully this works out, BTW I got the 18 T counter shaft sprocket from Randy  excited to get that on there too. I have a 38 rear ordered.

I use a 2003 FJR clutch master, works flawless. Adjustable lever, but you must modify the switch.

+ 1 on the FJR M/C.

Looks stock and works perfectly.  Switch wiring mod is straightforward.

I also use a brake M/C from a fazer.  Looks the same but has the better bore size (please note I can't remember the exact measurment as it's late and I'm tired, but I want to say 16mm??

Or mine with the FZ-1 master, threw on the blue-spots at the same time. If you're gonna make a project outta it... (It's pretty cheap too.)
