Title: Can I use blue dot calipers on my 85 FJ1100 with stock 16" front wheel?
Post by: JoBrCo on August 02, 2014, 07:34:58 PM
If so, for which bike and what years, if not, is there another alternative than buying 4 "Piston Assy,Caliper" Part No. "31A-W0057-00-00" @ $78.42 for a total of $313.68? I really wasn't prepared to replace the pistons, but the outer .25" is rusted far too bad, actually having pits, that definitely won't seal, instead eventually machining down, at least, the outer seal.

TIA!

The answer to your question has to be broken into separate mods. A 16" front wheel is not an issue with the Blue Dot Mod. The issue is the forks.

1. 16" wheel with OEM 85' forks.   The Blue Dots will not bolt on to the forks.

2. 16" wheel with OEM 85' forks and Blue Dot caliper Adaptors.   The Blue Dots will work fine with the 16" wheel.

3. 16" wheel with 88' and later FJ1200 forks.   The Blue Dots will work fine.

89' forks with 84'-87' 16" front wheel and Blue Dots. My FJ came with the wrong wheels when I purchased it.

Pat you the man!!  What can I do for you?  But to be honest with you I won't have it.  I shall pay you something, it's the way I'm built!  But I can't afford much, but what I got is yours!

What can I do for you?

Fred
Thanks for the breakdown Fred.  My next question would be where can I get the adapters and how much are they, but it looks like Pat is going to be a really nice guy to another guy he hardly knows.  I hope I deserve it!  I'll sure try!

By the way, is it my imagination or are those brake lines a bit stretched.  Are they SS?

Ok, here's the condition....take the money you save by using my calipers, and use it for new brake lines.

Ok?

If you agree, PM me your address, I'll get them in the mail next week.

Sounds like a good deal. I reckon a good set of OEM calipers with EBC pads and braided lines will perform as well if not better than an unknown set of blue spots. To get the best out of blue spots you will also need the appropriate master cylinder. Add that to new pads, lines and maybe seals and pistons and it becomes an expensive mod

Yes my friend, by now I'm well aware of the "expense" that you refer to.  After about a month of research and purchasing parts I told my wife, "Well I guess now we're committed."  She snapped her head around like Linda Blair and said, "Now?..., you mean for a month now"

In the above photo, the lines are OEM rubber. The lines were not stretched, they look funky because the Blue Dot calipers have a different banjo bolt position and the OEM brake line end has the wrong angle. Here is a photo of the complete finished brake set up with a FZR750R 17"wheel installed and s/s lines.

OK Fred, I got you.  I was just a little concerned because the radius at the lower banjo to line junction looked to be too small, possibly fatiguing under constant flexing due to the fork travel responding to uneven road conditions.  But your current setup looks great.

Believe it or not, my OEM line, on the right side, was being cut into by the edge of the oil cooler.  I'm assuming line positioning had somehow changed over time, because I'm sure Yamaha considered that when designing the bike. It was quite bad actually.
